Microsoft MSN Messenger is an excellent application where you can use your email accounts such as your MSN Hotmail to instantly chat with contacts over the internet. This is available for PCs and Macs. The Mac version has a lot less features but still enables you to do the basic things such as chat and send smilies and have conversations with multiple people at once.

I would recommend creating a Hotmail account if you don't already have one to use this service. You can then download MSN messenger for free. The latest version is Windows Live Messenger. You can chat to people, make audio calls, video calls, play games and much more. The interface is clear and simple making it easy to use.

You can customise your text by changing the colour, font and other things like whether you want it bold or italic. You can also change your display picture. You have a screen name and personal message where you can write things such as your name and then a little message. The chat really is instant so when someone sends you a message, you will receive it a moment later in time.

If you have a webcam, you can do a video call to your friends and have audio on too. You can even play a variety of MSN games with them in the chat window itself. If you are looking to add someone new, simply click 'add' and type in their email address and they will instantly appear on your list. You can choose to sort your contacts into online/offline or into certain named groups such as 'Friends', 'Family' etc.
