MSN messenger plays a big part in my daily life because it allows me to, with ease communicate with lots of my friends over the internet. MSN messenger is an instant messenger piece of software and is available for both Windows and Mac. It is a very popular piece of software that comes preinstalled with many computers, so I would be supprised if you havn't used it before. It was originally released in 1999 and quite often there are updates that are available for it which really do make improvements.
Not only does MSN allow you to speak to your friends by instant messaging them, you can also so voice calls with them providing you have an microphone. What I love about this feature is that the audio quality is excellent and is really only dependant on your microphone. It provides a cheaper alternative than using a mobile or homephone to speak with your friends and it is very easy to setup. There is also a 'Sharing folders' feature which is very useful if you have photo's etc that you wish to share with your friends. Files are simply drag and ropped into the sharing folder and your friends will then be able to access them. The speed of MSN is another major advantage, messages are delivered instantly and video images really are live making a real joy to use.
The interface of MSN is excellent, when you login you just need to enter your email and password and within a few seconds you will be logged in. When you are logged in you have the option of grouping your contacts in a variety of ways. For example, you can group them together between friends and family or whether they are online or offline. I love the fact that when you are logged in you also have the option of logging in to your 'HOTMAIL' email account. Hotmail now offers 25GB of storage for your emails and I have found it to be really reliable. Of course this is all free which is just fantastic!
There is also the option to (providing you have a webcam) to do video conferances with your friends and family. When using this feature I found the quality to be excellent and I was really impressed with how easy it was to setup and use. The quality is dependant on the webcam though and so if you are likely to use this feature a lot, I would recommend upgrading to a higher quality webcam. The installation of the software is very easy and the file size is just 30mb, so you will have no problem. There is also an online version of the MSN 'Internet MSN messenger' which allows you to use the MSN service over the internet where the software is not installed, at work for example or at a friends house.
You can even send offline messages to your friends which I think is an excellent feature because when your friend next logs in he/she will see the message you had left them. There is also a variety of games that you can play together with your friends over the internet which really is good fun and again is free. I really think that this is far more than just an instant messaging client. I'm sure you will find that many of your friends/family already have the MSN messaging service so give it a try. It really does offer a great way to chat to your friends and family cheaply! The frequent updates mean that regular improvements are made.
