Microsoft MSN Messenger is an instant messaging service which allows you to chat in real time with contacts on your contact list.

The download is easy, and most importantly free, but unfortunately now comes with lots of extras meaning it is bigger than before and much more difficult to install if you want to avoid useless extras. After that you simply sign up for a free hotmail / live account and you are good to go.

Being one of, if not THE largest im service in the uk, almost everybody will have access to this service. To contact them it's simply a case of inviting them to join your contact list and you are good to do pretty much anything. Apart from typing there is the ever useful ability to 'draw' allowing you to offend your friends with crude pictures. If bored, you can play a lot of good quality games ranging from minesweeper to jigsaw building. For the more tech-savvy there is the ability to conduct video conferencing, but I find that even with a fast connection the quality is lacking compared to more focused voip programs.

MSN messenger is now very customisable; you can change everything from your profile picture and wallpaper to having custom log-in sounds for each different contact.

Essentially, this is a great communication tool which is now rather unfortunately bogged down with useless extras.
