Advantages: Easy, free
Disadvantages: You can't beat talking in person
Msn Messenger reminds me of being about 13...
I started using this instant messaging service in about 2001 when I was 11 and my babysitter used it to talk to all of her school friends.
By the time I got to secondary school later that year, I was glad I had an account as it became the new thing to do, and no one asked for anyones mobile number anymore, it was all about msn messenger!
Since then social networking websites such as facebook and myspace have tried to give the users a comprehensive package, including not only a chat service but also a social network too, however, too often me and my friends have been using the lagging facebook chat, only to log onto msn and talk on there because it works a lot quicker, you can send files to each other with great ease (speed depends on capabilities of respective computers when sending files) upload a display picture, chat on webcam, use a range of emoticons and fonts to express how you're feeling, have a personal message and a username, and sort your contacts into groups, which makes it really easy to keep track of who's who and who's online.
I'd recommend anyone sign up for a messenger account as it's free and easy and a really easy way to have a good chat with someone instantly if you don't feel like picking up the phone, or if they're abroad and picking up the phone will cost you.
Also if your kids are constantly running up your phone bill, I'd encourage them to get an msn messenger account, they can only add people they know the e-mail address of and people have to request to add them, so anyone they don't want to talk to, they don't have to add.
Also it's quite safe because if you're receiving any unwanted attention, or being bullied on this service (for whatever reason), you can print off a full manuscript of the conversation, should you need it for proof, and you can easily block and delete contacts with 2 easy clicks!
All members get their own e-mail address of their choice and 50GB free storage space for their e-mails, as well as the opportunity to set up their own msn 'space' which is essentially like their own website!
The messenger platform itself can be downloaded free of charge from the hotmail website, downloads fairly quickly (depending on speed and capability of said computer) and very rarely does not work, although it can be frustrating if it doesn't work and you need to talk to someone!
Every time one of your contacts talks to you you're informed via a noise and a pop up box appearing in the bottom right hand corner of your screen.
All in all a fantastic service, free and easy to use!
