Let's be right when we talk about software downloads and utilites - they're pretty irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. That is not to say, however, that they aren't useful in some way or another.

MSN Messenger would probably be classed as an Instant Messaging tool. If this is the case, then I would be pretty disappointed because of its messaging capabilities.

In order to send notes to other users there is one, pretty minor clause. You must have a Hotmail address. Now this may seems a clever marketing ploy by Microsoft and Hotmail, but I believe that this will simply put users off using it. Also, compared to the likes of ICQ, even if you do have a Hotmail address, the product is very lightweight in terms of features. You can message and that's about it on the instant messaging scale.

The reason I use this product is for its email notification use. Whenever I connect to the Internet, I will receive a message that I have new email. I simply then click one button and I am taken straight to my email account (without the need to enter username or password) in almost lightening fast speed (- well, not really).

If you want an Instant Messenger then go for the famous ICQ program. If you've use a Hotmail account then download this program simply for its excellent email notification service.
