Advantages: Free, easy to use powerful client
Disadvantages: Overfeatured for home users
Telephony and video conferencing are the future of the Internet and no mistake. E-commerce will peak and level out but communications will take over. To use telephony and video conferencing or video chat, you need a decent client to 'interface' between you and the rest of the world. Microsofts NetMeeting does just that in a simple easy to use format that incorporates audio, from your sound card including microphone input and video from any video capture device you have installed on your PC. After installing NetMeeting for the first time, you will be asked what 'directory server' you want to connect to. This is a good question! You can go for the default Microsoft server but htis is congested and slow. Try searching on Yahoo! for a directory server that suits you, i.e. family, games, music etc. There are thousands of them! Once you have connected to your chosen directory server, click on the open book icon to see who is there and who you want to talk to. Simply click on their name and the 'call' button. If they want to talk to you, they will accept your call if not, they will ignore it. Simple as that! If you want to talk to your friends without slogging through a huge directory list here is a little trick! When you are all on line at the same time, it is possible for you all to connect together directly avoiding slow server links. Here is how: 1. Open a command (DOS) prompt. 2. If you are running 95/98, type in winipcfg and hit return. Note the field 'IP address' and write it down. 3. If you are using 2000 or NT, type in ipconfig and note IP address. 4. E-mail this IP address to your mates who wnat to connect up. 5. To connect to you, all they have to do is start up NetMeeting, in the pull down box next to the yellow telephone, type in the IP address you sent them then click on the yellow telephone. 6. Accept all the incoming calls and chat away
as you please!

fluffypup - 06/09/00 That's a handy little hint. I'll try that out the next time I'm on Netmeeting. Thanks. |
