Advantages: Many useful features, ideal for large projects

Disadvantages: Manual reading takes a long time

Visio appears to be one of the most useful programs of its kind although with being quite specialised is not used from the wide public and hence it isn't as known as other Microsoft programs.

Visio is basically a program that allows you to make flowcharts using your computer and although this sounds simple, it isn`t: You have no idea how much time this can save you until you`ve had occasion to use Visio for some time.

As many other programs now owned by Microsoft,, Visio was made until very recently by its own company. However, Visio (the company) is among the latest firms to have been assimilated into the monstrous Microsoft universe. Not that this doesn`t make perfect sense, though -- After all, if you already had tons and tons of money, what would you do?

I was first introduced to Visio while an intern at the Software Quality Assurance department of the university I was working at the time. I was helping to redesign a plant-wide intranet for managers and software engineers, with the project being grown to somewhere around 250 individual webpages. Things were getting harder to track, and it was decided that we needed a better way to organize the hierarchy of the intranet. At first, I didn`t like Visio, although I admit that I wasn`t acquainted with it to any degree. However, after just a few days of working with it, I realised what a great time-saver it can be.

Flowcharts are an extremely effective way to organize a large amount of data in such a way that it is much easier to read and interpret. Almost like magic, pages and pages of bland, hard-to-read information can be turned into a single diagram that clearly shows the precise relationships between all of the data in question. Small projects go from being minor inconveniences to just being easy, and large projects go from impossible to a few hours` work. The user can easily change sizes, shapes, and colors within the diagram, and the whole diagram itself can be manipul
ated just as easily. Visio is the quintessential tool for packing lots and lots of information into one concise visual aid.

There`s only one disadvantage I can add to my review of this product. While Visio is relatively easy to learn how to use to a superficial degree, it will probably take the average user quite awhile to become an expert Visio user. That`s not because the program is designed poorly, but rather is due to the fact that there are so many different graphical options available. Visio will definitely take you some time to master.
