Advantages: Great design tool

Disadvantages: limited by Netscape compatibility.

I expect some of my friends will wonder where I have been for the last week. No opinions and such. Well, I have been to London to study.
I have been studying Enterprise Web Development with ASP using VS6 at Learning Tree Associates.
It comprises of 2 main applications Visual Basic 6.0 and Interdev 6.0.
The Course was excellent (must write about it later) but it gave me a great insight into Web development and programming using this powerful and creative piece of software.
You really must try it out if you are a developer, but then again, I expect you have. Obviously Macromedia Dream weaver and Ultra Dev are more advanced now but use a much more modern platform.
Because it is a Microsoft product, VS6 has limits to compativility.
For example, Visual Basic components may not work with all browsers such as Netscape as it is not supported.
The new VS7 due out next year will be much better and much more supported. It will be called Studio 2000 and designed to run on Windows 2000 machines. Cool huh?
To get the most out of VS6, follow these simple instructions.
DONT try using it with Win 95 or even NT4 Workstation. Its simply not powerful enough to use VS6 as your objects become corrupted if you put more than about 3 on each page.
Try to use NT Server for development (if your boss will pay for the licence)

DO test all applications you develop in VS6 in both Netscape and IE5 because not everything works if using Netscape.

DO work in Design View as much as possible as you can do most of your object modelling in this screen. Its much simpler to drag and drop items in Interdev than coding by hand.

USE Interdev for most of your ASP work and try building COM objects in Visual Basic. You can then make them into DLL's and call them in your ASP Script.

If you dont do any development, this may have gone way above your heads but try using it if you are ready to take your first steps on the ASP ladder.
