If you do not use Napster, or have never even heard of it, then where have you been? Napster has been one of the biggest things to happen on the internet ever. And is also becomming one of the biggest arguements of the ethics of the Internet also. I have to admit that I started downloading Mp3's when they were just an idea and nobody really knew what they were, since then my collection has just expanded, I am also not going to try and conceal the fact that quite a lot of them are copyrighted records, but to be honest my dear I just don't give a damn. I was aware of the legal complications when I first started downloading these, and it didn't stop me then, I remember the feeling I had when I downloaded my first Mp3, when i turned on Winamp and sat there and listened to the best three minutes of music in my life, and it wasn't because the song was anything special, I can't even remember what the sng was and I probably wouldn't even like it anymore, it was simply to do with the fact that it was free. The fact that by downloading this song and not tramping off to Virgin or HMV I had managed to save myself £3.00 with a £1.60 bus journey as well. And who can argue with that, (apart from Metallica of course) and what sensible person would not see how much money there is to be saved by doing this, but for bands there is another side to all this than just the nagative. By downloading this music instead of paying for it I have become interested in bands I had never even heard of, and have also bought there records, I am talking about bands like Limp Bizkit, Slipknot, Green Day, Metallica, Papa Roach, I mean these are bands that are frowned upon by quite a lot of people and I would never have bought anything by them because I didn't actually know what there music was about. And that is what these bands are forgetting, that by doing this they are actually gaining themselves publicity. But anyway, this opin
ion should not be written on the ethics of downloading mp3's it should be about the piece of software in question. Napster, what a brilliant piece of software it is to any mp3 collector, like myself, it's true that nobody really uses the chat option that much, but that's not what we go on for really. It has a superb search system, that if you use properly you can find just about anything that you want to (Its true) on just whatever bitrate you want to as well, great for the music lovers who like that extra good qaulity sound for there music, then there is the transfer option which guides you through the download process and makes you feel tht little bit better when the little bastard on the other end of the transfer cancells it. Once you have downloaded the Mp3 there is the library that you can store your Mp3'z, you can also listen to them with the software as well which is quite a cool little idea off the programmers. But the best thing about the software is that it is still there, how many collecters out there find it hard to find a good site and then get extra pissed off when they see it closed due to copyright! I am sorry if my language has gone in a downward spiral since the beginning of this opinion, but it just annoys me greatly, my only urge is KEEP THIS FREE. Thanx for your time. MrT
