Advantages: Free music from any genre!
Disadvantages: Often tempremental (?)
NAPSTER is probably the coolest piece of Internet technology on the web. Being able to download a piece of music from a database that must extend into millions (?), there is a fair chance that the piece of music that you are looking for is likely to available. This software is very controversial, for it allows you to download some music that is copyrighted. Record companies don't take kindly to this as it affects CD sales which in turn is hampering the industry. The technology allows that any one on NAPSTER with songs they have downloaded previously or have put some of their own collection into the library on the site, can share files with other NAPSTER users, which come in the MP3 format, as long as they have the software off of Napster.com, which is free and easy to download. It used to be easier to get than this where you would talk to people in chatrooms and see what they will give you. Bureaucracy, (and Mettalica) has seen that this is no longer the case. When you have the programme off of NAPSTER, you are given a number of options, once the programme is installed. You can chat with other NAPSTER users, using the chat rooms provided. I should think this still helps to find people with the music that you want. You then have your ready-made library of songs that you have downloaded or uploaded from your own collection. In here, you can arrange the songs into a playlist, and then make the music play from your soundcard and speakers. You can also search for any song in the world and probably find it, and then you can track the download as it is happening. Also, if you think the member you are downloading from could be useful, you can put them on your list, which means you can search through their collection. As well as a NAPSTER news page, this programme is very inclusive. The fact that you and any other member can upload songs out of your CD collection means that the possibilities are literally endless, and considering the music is all
free you really can't go wrong. Being well into the Metal and punk scene, I love the fact that I can get songs by bands who are never in the public spotlight, or to be frank, ever likely to be. This is the reason why I value it so much, and although I do not yet own and MP3 player, I can still listen to the music through my soundcard. Brilliant! The fact is that although often temperamental, (or is this my computer? Please leave a comment to say if it is or isn't), this is a truly fantastic web facility, that offers free music from any genre, therefore appealing to every music fan in the world, which is why every surfer there is should be upset to see it closed down.

gollygumdrops - 25/01/01 I feel to guilty, and sit waiting for the twenty minutes it takes someone to download the last 10% on a teeny weeny modem. If I don't have the time, I just don't fire it up 'cos I remember how cheesed off I got. With DSLthose problems are much reduced. |
