Advantages: easy to use
Disadvantages: virtually redundant
Its a great shame that Napster has been made the mp3 scapegoat by the big music corporations as it was without doubt the grand-daddy of them all in terms of simplicity. Sure, it has it's defects such as no support for broken downloads but other than that there was no real problem in finding the song you wanted. When i first started using Napster over a year before any of the court proceedings, you could find just about any song at any time. It was great for finding rare songs such as live or acoustic tracks. Sadly those days are now all but gone. Try using Napster now and you'll be lucky if you find any song you want that's copyrighted. Fair enough you might think, the music is copyrighted so i shouldn't be able to download it. Well yes, that's true, but the whole purpose of Napster was to enable you to listen to any song you wanted, just like the radio but you get to choose what you listen to. you can't do that anymore so sadly, Napster is no longer viable for searching for free copyrighted material. it looks like it is going to start some kind of subscription service but if its free mp3s your after, and i suspect it is, forget Napster and look st other file sharing programs services that have so far escaped the claws of the record companies. Try www.gnutella.co.uk which is a UK based service and doesn't need to comply with US laws, or napigator.
