Advantages: It gives music to the masses
Disadvantages: Illegal
It seems that something has upset Metallica, and a few other "artists". The target for their hatred? A little white cat with green eyes and a strange taste in headphones. I am, Of course, Talking about Napster. Not heard of it? Maybe you've just landed on this planet. What this application basically does is create a global FTP site for users to download music, the people behind napster prefer "sharing" rather than "download", as you are supposed to "share" your mp3 files with other users. Maybe I'm missing the concept when i move my recently downloaded Files into another directory so they can't be uploaded (taking up valuable bandwidth). Call me tight, but my modem sucketh. Anyway, the whole problem with napster is its so simple to use, and totally and utterly illegal. A real pity. Copyright infringement laws mean that anyone using this program should, in theory have their hands cut off in turkey. So Metallica are right? Nope, Its my belief that napster is actually beneficial to the music industry. Maybe I'm just one person, but i know that Napster has helped me "try before i buy", my collection of music has increased ten fold after using napster. Its introduced me to bands that i would never normally come into contact with. So, the program? useful? yep, totally. If you love music, or maybe your just after one song then napster is the place to be. I read that Napster has a comunity of 20 million, which is a hell of a lot of Mp3's. If the music industry was clever, they'd aid Napster, not destroy it. But we all know that the music industry isn't clever (Steps anyone?) and so they will force napster underground. A mistake they will ultimately pay for. My solution? Sony Music Buy napster, ask for a download price on the application, then charge people for every "transaction" of mp3 and voliá a whole new way to sell music. Maybe i'm just a dreame
r.
