Advantages: Good alternative to Adobe Photoshop
Disadvantages: Expensive for what it is, other programmes do the same for less
If you use a digital camera, make webpages, or scan photos you will find this proagramme very useful. Paint Shop Pro has all the features of more expensive image editing programmes like Adobe Photoshop and it is a fraction of the price. If you just use an image editor to retouch photos you probably won't even think of using the other features on this programme. It can change picture resolution, add a filter effect, posterize, reverse the colours, change to warecolour effect and lots of other things. (You really need to get this on a shareware basis to assess whether it is what you need.) It's main function, as far as I'm concerned is the ability to convert image files where ever they come from, regardless of format. Version 7 includes animation tools which are handy for use in web publishing. The whole package is easy to use and the help section is good and easy to follow. The only thing I didn't like about this is that if you download the shareware version (www.jasc.com) and start using it, your image files are changed to PSP format. If you subsequently decide to uninstall it you can't open these files. I must admit that I found this quite annoying. I was forced to continue using PSP if I wanted to be able to use those image files. At a cost of £81 if you decide to keep using it I thought this was quite expensive. I much prefer the Ulead Photoshop software that came with my digital camera as it is just as versatile without the price tag.

- 01/05/01 Agreed - a good program. I have to say, I get away with using version 5 - heck, graphics are difficult enough without getting into even more complexity. Thanks for an informative op. |
