Most people do not fully understand or wish to understand all the intricate maths involved in cryptography. They like me just want to know that sensitive data is kept private, and that they can 'sign' emails digitally to prove that it was them and not an impostor who wrote the email. PGP allows you to do all this, and integrates seamlessly with several popular email clients - I use it in conjuntion with Eudora. Back in 1993 before the Internet had attained any degree of popularity or affordability by us peasants, I first came across PGP (Pretty Good Privacy) written for the Amiga. Basically it is an encryption programme that will encrypt text or binary files that are 100% secure against being broken. The question has often been asked why do we, the normal guy in the street, need an encryption programme? The answer is simple. We all have sensitive data of some form or another on our computers, be it personal details such as financial information, or files we would rather other people didn't have access to. There are several products on the market that can accomplish this task for you, however the Internet *standard* is called PGP, which stands for pretty good privacy. As well as having the ability to encrypt files and folders, I find the most useful feature the one to encrypt your email, so that only the intended recipient of the mail can read it.
