There are two things which attract me to a utility program for the PC. The first is how useful it is going to be to me, and the second is price...I can't see too much point in shelling out for something which I have gotten on without for the past however many years. Fortunately, Rambooster fulfills both these criteria admirably - not only is it damn useful, but its also 100% free! Ramboster is an essential piece of software for anyone who uses a computer which is rather short on RAM. Personally, I have 64Mb which is probably around the least you should consider now, and find that I run out quite quickly(crap memory management here somewhere). Everytime you run a program Windows allocated RAM space to it. When that program is closed, much of that allocated memory remains allocated to that program for reasons best left know to techies so you find yourself running low. Eventually you will need to reboot because you have no memory left...bummer. Well Rambooster goes a long way to prevent this happening. It runs in the background, or more obtrusively if you set it to do so, whilst you go about your usual computing business. When the level of available RAM falls below a particular threshhold then it automatically frees up a set amount of RAM(again defined by you) and lets you carry on without the system degradation and need to reboot. :o) Sounds like it ought to be all very technical but Rambooster is far from being so. In fact it is incredibly easy to use and you will have absolutely no need to look at the instructions or anything like that to be able to use it. In fact, there is no need to even alter any of the settings as it will work perfectly without you doing so. There are options there though for those that want them to switch off the sound effects(your first port of call), set the amount of RAM to free at the threshhold level, set when to free up RAM(ie. when the processor is xx% free) and that sort of thing...but like I said, there is no nee
d to change anything if you don't want to. Personally I think this a very useful piece of software, very much along the lines of FreeMem which I also recently reviewed but with one major difference. FreeMem requires you to manually free up memory, whilst Rambooster does it automatically when the level of free memory falls below a certain level. FreeMem offers this same functionality but only once you have registered your software...and payed the price to buy it. So, two pieces of software which do the exact same thing, one which is totally free and one which is around $20 to buy...I think I'll stick with this one. Its also a much nicer interface. Even if you do have loads of RAM on your system you can still benefit from using this and its very stable and I haven't noticed any conflicts with other software either...in short its all benefits and no cons!
