Advantages: It's easy to use
Disadvantages: it frazzled my computer
Being a music fan, I find myself most nights, listening to the latest releases on the Internet. When I started to search for music and video clips I soon found out that I needed Real Player. Most sites have their multimedia in Real format, so I went to the Real site and downloaded the player. No sooner had I installed it I had trouble. The player kept freezing up, or would not come on at all. Thinking it was my computer I uninstalled Real Player and set it up again. The same thing happened. My whole system kept freezing and in the end I had to do a complete re-install. After a month or so of my computer running as sweet as a nut, I found myself needing Real Player, even though Windows Media Player is better it's not as widely used. So I went through the whole procedure again. I am now sitting here with a Real Player that works when it feel like it, and a Real Juke box that doesn't work at all, and a system that won't shut down properly. Real Player is a fantastic piece of software, if it works, opening up all kinds of multimedia to you, I just wish that all sites would include their streaming audio and video in both Real and Windows format.

- 17/08/00 Real Player is an odd piece of software. It has improved over it's various versions and the latest Beta Version 8 isn't bad at all. I've always had a few problems with it in that you normally get it crashing for no reason and the playback still often sounds like something SETI would hope to hear from an alien civilisation 50 light years away. The latest Windows Media Player is fantastic though although it takes up more memory than a lot of players. |
