Advantages: Very easy to use and obtain games, enhances existing gaphics.
Disadvantages: Can be hard to play without a game pad
I got my hands on SNES9x over 3 years ago and played a year or so out of it, still do off and on.
The interface is easy to use in that you can load your game ROM easily from the file menu and get up and running in no time at all with little or no experience needed. (ROMs can be obtained online but must be deleted unless you have the original cartridge).
To control games you are able to use more than one method, 1 use the keyboard but this can become tricky when you have 6 buttons the d-pad and start and select to assign and remember, or 2 use a game pad, I invested in a logic 3 game pad which looked exactly like the model they produced for the SNES, yes I am that sad but it feels right when using it. Using an on-screen picture of a SNES pad you can setup the buttons and assign them to your pad.
Ok moving on to why this makes games better than before, SNES9x uses both hardware and software rendering and you can apply Super Eagle screen filtering to re-draw all the old and blocky graphics to look much smoother, Super Mario World looks great, in addition to that if you have a 3D card you can add filters such as bi-liner to add further smoothing.
Now as most people remember from the SNES saving your game was either down to passwords or if you were really lucky battery backed up carts like Super Mario World had, since an emulator can't do that they opt for saving states (kind of like pausing the game and resumign later), so you simply press the Esc key and use the mouse to and select a state slot to use and save your game, so next time you play you can get right back to where you were, Marvellous!!!
Ok the legal bit, since you can download almost any game ever made for the SNES the law says these ROMs should be treated as backups, so even though I got lots of ROMs on the CD that I bought with SNES9x on I only used to bother playing Mario world so I though it best to pick up a cart at an old car boot sale, so if anyone were to pull me up at least I am legal.
All in all Retro gaming at its best.
10/10 from me.
Summary: Take a trip back in time and play your old favorites.
