Disadvantages: A little bit on the ugly side, No 'automatic update' via the Internet
Being a network technician isn't all fun and games, you know. Sure, being able to link yourself directly into the office switch for fast network access is cool, and even data cabling has it's upsides, but one of the things you have to contend with in this role is the hated user. Every technician knows that computers and networks all work fine 100% of the time - until the loose nut known as the 'user' is added into the mix. After all, virus infections would never happen if the users didn't insist on using the internet, or bringing in work on floppy disks. But, a world without users is an impossible paradise. An alternative solution has to be found. The solution (or part of it, at least) is a virus scanner. After looking at a number of different solutions (including Norton Anti-Virus that I use at home), we decided that Sophos was the package for us. A reasonably-priced Educational Site Licence not only allowed us to install it on all our network and stand alone machines, but even to allow staff to take it home and install it there! Okay, so perhaps the interface isn't as impressive as Norton's effort, and perhaps it's lacking advanced features such as e-mail scanning and integration with Windows Explorer, but it's a solid package nontheless. With the ability to roll updates out from a centralised network install, it really is a fire-and-forget solution. The Educational version on CD-ROM supports almost every operating system and processor type under the sun, and with monthly updates mailed to us on CD we don't even have to waste our (sadly limited) bandwidth. As for the performance of the product, after installing it at home on a Windows NT Server machine, it picked up on an infected file that Norton had always missed. If that's not impressive, I don't know what is! In short, if you're a home user looking for a friendly anti-virus solution, try Norton Anti-Vir
us instead. If you're a company looking for a cost-effective solution that's easy to maintain across your network, look no further - highly recommended! -Blacklaw
