Advantages: Plenty of features, Works in the background, Easy to setup
Disadvantages: Occasional crash
If you actually look at the product overview on the Sygate website it leads you to believe "this thing must be complicated!" but it is actually one of the simplest proxies I have used. One of the advantages of Sygate over other proxies is that is uses NAT (network Address Translation) which allows the PC that is sharing the internet to have full access without the need for time consuming frustrating browser set-ups, port forwarding or software configuration. All clients act just like the gateway PC with popular software like Napster (proxy nightmare) or any Gnutella client working with no fuss. Sygate also uses new 'OneNIC' support that allows for one network card to be used to share an Internet connection if a DSL or cable modem is used. This 'Virtual NIC' means that users no longer have to install a second NIC on the gateway machine, this can save time and money. Another thing about Sygate (surprised me this!) is that the client software does not have to be installed unless you want to use the client to administer the gateway PC. All clients will continue work happily without the client software. The only negative thing I'd have to say about Sygate is that on my system the engine has been known to crash during boot up, with a re-boot being needed to get it working, however this does not happen very often and I can assure you the pros of this software outweigh this one con. So basically you could have 2 or more machines sharing an Internet connection be it Modem, Cable, and DSL in the time it takes to install a single piece of software once... Excellent
