Advantages: Capture the previously uncaptuarable !

Disadvantages: Can take some getting used to

Multimedia content on websites continues to increase. You can listen to music, tune into any number of internet radio stations and even check out live concerts from your favourite artists. If you are looking for a way of recording them for future personal listening, Total Recorder is the solution.

Websites tend to use streaming as a method to deliver sound to the visitor. Although it's an efficient way that doesn't result in tieing up your PC's resources, it can be difficult to capture sound. A right-click of the mouse in an attempt to save the sound file to your PC won't work with a streamed file.
A lead between your sound card and a cassette deck may work, but you may lose sound quality. Total Recorder takes care of all this by digitally recording sound in any possible format you can imagine such as mp3, wav etc, the settings of which can be adjusted to your taste eg: high quality MP3 or space saving lower quality MP3 for speech recording etc. You are always in total control of the quality you choose to record at. But the program is even smarter than this. If you are worried about system sounds such as those played by Windows when opening/closing programs, incoming email alerts etc, Total Recorder ignores them so they won't appear on the final recording.

Its most useful feature is the schedule facility. You can set Total Recorder to record just like you would set a video timer. The timer takes a bit of getting used to, but that's because of the flexibility of the program.

Although the ability to record online audio is the main reason for buying this program, Total Recorder copes admirably with the duties of a standard PC sound recorder/player.

After two years of using the standard version, I paid a further $20 to upgrade to the Pro version which adds further features including the ability to make the scheduler connect automatically to the website, record the audio and close down the PC when complete. There are also advanced sound editor facilities which enable you to chop up sound files. Unless you using your PC to make professional commercial recordings, or require top notch advanced effects/processing, you don't need Adobe Audition/ Cool Edit or Wavelab. Total Recorder will cover all your needs adequately.

If you want to commit your favourite web concerts to CD, or record internet radio overnight to play back later on an mp3 player, Total Recorder is well worth the $12, or £35 for the Pro version. Either way, you don't have to worry about having an out of date version as the price includes free updates for life. Now that's music to anyone's ears.....

Summary: At last you can tap into and capture the world of internet audio.
