A different sort of search engine is available from your standard ones called 'Webferret'. It is different because it is downloaded onto your PC rather than being executed as a visit to a web-site.

The software can be downloaded from the ZDNET web-site
(www.zdnet.com/downloads/)or www.ferretsoft.com. There are free versions and pay for versions.

Once installed and running, a small screen is displayed where the key search words can be input. As with most searchengines, you can look for the exact phrase, or a number of other combinations.

What makes Webferret different is it searches through a pre-chosen set of search engines. These include:

* AOL
* Euroseek
* Google
* Yahoo (USA)
* Excite
* ZDNET

You can select as many or as few as you require.

Other options include the ability to limit the number of results either by search engine or in total. There are controls for the family too. You can filter out pornographic results and foul language too. The filtering process is password protected of course.

The results obtained can also be sorted into either: relevance, source, name etc.

You can also ask Webferret to remove URL duplicates.

This product was recommended to me by a number of people on the www.net4nowt.com bulletin board. Its not the total solution, but its flexible and can be personalised. Best of all its free.
