Advantages: Excellent simple to use interface, straight forward to operate. Excellent value for money.

Disadvantages: Lacks some of the features Sibelius has.

I have Capella 2002 edition and have been satisfied it completely. It has about 85% of the features that Sibelius has and costs about a quarter of Sibelius too.

The user interface is simple and looks very much like the a musical version of Microsoft Word with icons for all different functions arranged in rows at the top.

Note input is easy, either by clicking on an on screen piano keyboard, typing in using the computer keyboard (A, B, C etc), play the notes in via a midi enabled electronic music keyboard.

The results look very professional and the beaming of notes and note spacing is excellent and clear too. Full chord features are available too and the number of staves can be as many as you want ie. for orchestral parts.

It also has a playback feature where it will play the score for you with all the parts (ie. complete orchestra) or just a single part (ie. violin I) for example. There are a variety of sounds to choose from including all the traditional instruments and some other sounds too. It doesn't sound wholly realistic but it does its job well so you can hear for errors.

It lacks the polish and finesse and the swish interface of Sibelius but in terms of features and ease of use its all pretty much there. For the price though, its excellent value for money and is a worthy alternative to Sibelius for those with shallower pockets.

Summary: Excellent value for money, simple to use interface, professional look to scores & many features.

Sorry, Sam. Capella is a music notation software package. It allows you to type music out on your computer so you get scores that look like one out of a music book.
