The ancestral file system is the best back up system a company can have. My friend lost all his data, but with the ancestral file system he managed to get it back.

There is always the chance that data held on either a disk or tape master file could be lost. An inexperience user, a power failure, fire or even theft could destroy it. A disgruntled employee might even deliberately damage it. For most companies, the loss of vital data could prove disastrous. However, using the grandfather – father – son principle it is possible to recreate the master file if it is lost.

The principle works like this. Basically three generations of files are kept. The oldest master file is called the grandfather file and is kept with its transaction file. These two files are used to produce a new master file called the father file, which, with its transactions are used to produce a new master file called the father file, which, with its transaction file, is used to create the most up to date file, called the son file.

The process is repeated and the son becomes the father and the father becomes the grandfather and so on. Only three generations are needed and the other file can be re-used. Usually this system, also called the ancestral file system, is used for disks, although it can also be used for tapes.

So for businesses, this backing up system in a masterpiece. If my friend didn’t have his business would have been down the drain. So I do recommend it.
