Way back in the mists of time, when the internet was still something which was very slow and cost you per minute, I was introduced to Winamp. It was at the time deemed to be the best free audio player about. I downloaded it and was immediately impressed with it, it was a small download and installed very quickly.

I liked that it loaded up nice and quickly, much faster than Windows Media Player of the time and was happy playing all sorts of different audio formats.

Fast forward to today and I still use Winamp. There are versions you have to pay for but I have never used those as I don't need any of the extra features they include so I just stick to the free player.

Having transfered my entire CD collection to computer, I want to be able to easily browse through my music collection and be able to play what I want easily. Winamp lets me do this and it does so simply, and efficiently. The media Library window allows easy selection of artist, album etc etc and gives you quick options to play the album, or single tracks. It also allows you to enqueue items (be it single tracks or whole albums) so they will play after the tracks currently on your play list.

This feature is very useful indeed for making ad-hoc playlists, when you don't want to interrupt the music. For example I had a party with all my friends round and had music playing, it was great to be able to add tracks to play at any point during the evening.

I also use winamp at work where I also have quite a few albums copied to the computer, to play during the day to help me concentrate on my work.

Although I just stick to the default skin, you can choose from any number of different skins to make winamp look very different indeed, some of which really are great works of art!!!

I have tried other audio players at various times but in the end I always come back to winamp because it just does everything so well and with no hassle. I'd heartily recommend it to anyone.
