Advantages: Easy to use, free, bundled CODECs

Disadvantages: free version does not rip or burn CDs

One of the main competitors to Windows Media Player and iTunes. It has been around a long while and over the years has seen numerous improvements bringing it up to what is now an impressive application.

It has all the usual features present in media players including playlist editing and importing that is easier to use than WMP. The new version also supports importing iTunes libraries.

One feature that it has which, while not being hugely significant, makes listening more enjoyable is the fading out of songs when stop is pressed. It is not a long fade out but is long enough to remove the sharp sudden silence that is left by some other players.

Another benefit is the collection of codecs that come in the package. These allow the player to open all of the files in common everyday use whereas WMP needs extra ones to be installed frequently.

This player, like its major competitors is free to download and use although there is a pro edition for $20 that adds functionality that is missing from the free edition such as CD ripping

Summary: A good program that takes on the major players and proves itself equal
