Advantages: Easy to use, convenient

Disadvantages: bit basic

Yahoo messenger is nice and simple, those little smiley faces and emoticons seem so apt, bright and cheerful.

You basically download it free from yahoo, and use your yahoomail Id, and you can talk to anyone else on the service, like any other friends on your mail list
(handily, it also notifies you of incoming mail to your address)

As with other services, you can search the white pages, with keywords, and filters, like profiles with pictures and so forth.

You can also Conference and talk to more than one person at once, messaging someone, doesn't really replace a phonecall for me, but it has it's own place, it's a good way of leaving messages for people if they're inter-junkies, more likely to check their mail than their phone.

But, my problem is that it seems a bit too simple, i prefer icq now, it seems to have a greater scope for things such as attatchments...

(and also downloading different schemes for it... ok, i'm shallow).

but if you haven't used one of these message programs before, it's a good place to start.

yeah Randyolph's opinion is up to the mark except for the annoying habit of being frequently disconnected. It is easy and quick to reconnect but it is a pain after a while.
