Advantages: Hack-proof security for FREE
Disadvantages: None - Get it NOW
I have been using Zone Labs Zone Alarm for quite a while now. I have recently built a new system for myself so decided to download their latest version 2.1.25 and install it. I thought their earlier version was good but this one is even better. If you are new to firewalls, this one is simple to use, totally effective and most of all, it's FREE. There are many firewalls available, they all work on similar principles - deneying access to your computer from hackers who either try to get sensitive information from your system or try to infect you with virii. A firewall, as the name implies, puts a wall up to check what is coming in to and going out of your system via the internet, if this data is unauthorized, it will block it. Of coarse, there is a down-side to firewalls, that being that some download sites, gaming sites, etc.. don't like firewalls and therefore don't respond correctly. This is a minor inconvenience considering the security you get. You can always shut down Zone Alarm for these sites anyway, and re-start it when you've finished gaming, etc. After you have downloaded and installed Zone Alarm, it is worth checking your security at https://grc.com - They test all the weak ports etc on your system. I tested mine and was told that either my computer was stealthy enough not to be seen by anyone trying to hack in, or my computer was turned off !!! I am a great believer in free software so if you only download one programme in your time on the internet, this is the one you should get - NOW. www.zonelabs.com

- 19/12/00 Good advice Timski. Ihave been using Zonealarm for about 3 months and have had no problems with it. Incidentally, there is a later version Release 2.1.44 now available which fixes a few minor "bugs" that were in the earlier versions. |
