Advantages: Free money
Disadvantages: Not awarded in huge amounts
If you have any connection with the armed forces (eg your parents served or maybe you did) you can apply to the various forces' charities for help while studying. I received £200 from the WRNS Benevelolent Trust and the Royal Naval Benevolent Trust for books and the British Legion offer similar funding. They do not usually give money towards cost of living expenses but will make awards for books, field trips etc. SSAFA (The Sailors Soldiers and Air Force Association) also hold lists of all the service charities and are in most local phone directories.
