Advantages: A good scheme worth £150.00 per person
Disadvantages: Suspended due to high demand and rogue training providers.
Individual Learning Accounts were a brilliant idea by the government to provide funding for adult learners. This Government grant gave £150.00 to anyone who wanted to apply, to be used towards the cost of coursework. The Government have now suspended this scheme partly due to its amazing success. Over 2.5 million people have applied for an ILA which just goes to show how many people are interested in furthering their education. Without Government funding most people simply cannot afford to pay for extra learning. I did my ECDL (see other op) using an ILA scheme and have found it extremely useful. I would never have been able to afford to do this course without Government funding. Another reason for the scheme being suspended is the aggressive selling methods and poor quality of coursework being provided by some Training Providers. No more applications for ILA's will be accepted although if you already have an account it will continue to be supported as long as your coursework is booked with the ILA centre by 7th December. This means if you have an ILA membership number lying around that you haven't accessed you need to get on with it NOW. Otherwise you will lose the money that has been allocated to you. Choose your Training Provider carefully though. There are many rogue companies out there who may access your account but not send you any coursework. If you need any help finding course work to suit your needs email me and I will do all I can to help.

- 31/10/01 sorry for the low rating but this op doesn't seem to fit here! The ILA scheme is now dead anyway.
It's quite a good op though so I do feel a tiny bit guilty! |

- 31/10/01 It is such a shame this scheme has been abandoned. My sister has just started ECDL and is really enjoying it.
BTW my Dad didn't do ECDL in the end but now has a job as a City & Guilds Trainer at an open learning centre (he has just retired from ICL) and is motoring his way through the IT C&G.
No news of my £25 computer. I guess this was just one of those scams that has put an end to this scheme. Jo |
