Possibly the biggest and best Students Union in the UK, it's always winning awards for something or other. Theres plenty to do in the Union, with its cinema, places to eat, shops and bars. The auditorium hosts the film unit at night and shows films which although arent new releases you cant complain for only £1.70. So if you missed it at the cinema first time round you can still catch it. Theres Loxley Food Court with a couple of different types of restaurant. Great for a fried breakfast if you couldn't be bothered to make breakfast yourself. I have decided to write this review on Bar One as I spent far too much time in the place while I was at Sheffield University between 1995-1999. In fact I virtually lived there during my second year due to the fact that it is right next door to the Physics department and that I lived miles away! Since leaving I have been back and the bar has gone through another face-lift to make it look like a trendy winebar. Bar One is the main bar in Sheffield Universities Student Union Building. The University of Sheffield has student night most nights..they are: Tuseday : The Tuesday Club, I would say one of the best clubs for your left field dance music in the area. Drum and Bass, Hip Hop and various beats, plus cheap booze always equals a good night. Lots of people there for a good time, a few pretentious types standing by the wall and nodding. Home to some of the most insane hair in Sheffield. Wednesday : The Big One. Do you play sport, like getting extremely pissed and dancing to cheese? This ones for you. Thursday : Fuzz Club. The Porter's Cottage is situated in Hunter's Bar, just down Sharrowvale Road. It's a great student hangout. Although at times, particularly on Friday & Saturday night it's quite busy, you normally won't have to wait too long before getting a table. The jukebox is packed with great tunes - not the normal Britney and Elvis that you find on pub jukeboxes. THere's a good selection of hip-hop, drum & bass, and indie. The beer is pretty cheap, and the staff are very friendly. All in all, a great place to while away your undergraduate (& postgraduate) years.
