While you are a student, consider looking at the Institute of Field Archaeologists (www.archaeologists.net), who will very kindly give you discounted membership and professional advice. My Experiences and Advice ... it produces (as well as marketing texts etc.) are translated into English and nearly 30 other languages. The size of the company means that there are over 100 English-speaking translators working in here Germany alone. On a typical day, I will either be translating the user interface (icons and screen text) for the software products or the documentation describing how the customers can use the software. As with any job, translation has its good sides and its bad sides. If you are simply translating the same type of texts for days on end it can become very dull – especially if they are very technical and you are having difficulty understanding the original German.... My Experiences and Advice ... Bed: 3:30am Friday: Start 7:30am Finish large project, proof read it and despatch it. Presentation (£80) for Monday morning. Bed 6am ? hungover. Saturday: Start: 4pm Fi nish presentation. Sunday: 11am: Foreword for a poetry anthology (£50) by 6pm Bed 12am? Ready for a wekk of hell perhaps.... Total earnings £2180 ? number of times you have threatened to kick computer as it crashes: 841. So how do I translate?
