There was a time when in my culture, our elders believed that women are supposed to stay home and do the housework. They were not allowed to work outside. That was then but now, I would say there are no restrictions except under the special circumstances like I was in. My uncle and aunt brought me up. Yes they were my guardian which means I had to do what they thought was right. I can understand that because I am their responsibility, they are doing everything for my best interest. My uncle even decided for me that I have to study all the science subjects, as he wanted me to become a pharmacist. But we all know things don't work like that. I couldn't argue with him and took the subjects he wanted me to. So as you all can guess what happened when my final exams came? Yes I failed my exams. What a waste of whole year! How embarrassing. I was so upset for so many days plus every member of the family told me off. How very nice! Anyway, I dropped those subjects and took the ones I was interested in. Yes I did pass my exam. Finished my school and I did this course in Data Processing. They sent me to this firm of Chartered Accountants for work experience. This was my first job. I was not going to get paid for this but I didn't mind that. My job title was Office Junior. My duties included: 1. Making Tea for all the staff 2. Going shopping and get sandwiches for everyone 3. Tones of Filing 4. Photocopying 5. Answering the door when the doorbell rings 6. Answering the telephone 7. Some postage work like sealing letters and sticking stamps on them. 8. Helping the ledger department in calculating sheets and sheets of ledgers 9. When clients arrive, offer them Tea/coffee and take them to my boss when he is ready 10.Take the letters to the Post Office I enjoyed doing my job. Everybody was so nice. Wh
at I believe is that no matter how big or small your job is, you won't enjoy it if you don't like working there. Anyway, my work experience period was over and they offered me a permanent job. I was very surprised. Wow so they actually liked my work. My uncle was not very happy about this; he didn't want me to work. But I didn't listen to him this time. I accepted the job. It was time I thought of my future. So that was my very first job with money. I worked there for 3 years. Got my promotion and good payrise every year. The reason why I left that job is because I had to go overseas for more than 4 weeks and they wouldn’t give me that long leave paid or unpaid. My next job was working as a Data Entry Clerk. There was too much harassment. So I left that job. Although I left this company, I had lots of experience in my hands. So this made it easy to get my third job. That job involved all kind of office work. But no tea making. I was happy there but because of the low pay and the people smoking in the office made me leave. My next job was for a small call centre; taking calls for various companies. I had no problem there either. Worked there for a year and half. Then I saw an opportunity of working for one of the largest companies in UK. I applied and due to my qualifications and experience, I managed to get this job. The pay was really good. They give bonus twice a year and a payrise. The reason why I chose this company is because I could see that there are lots of future prospects in this company. I am on very good pay and my job has changed to Technical Service Adviser. People are very nice here. I am being appreciated no doubt! My advice to you all is that if there is an opportunity, grab it. It will do you good. Thank you for reading.

- 05/10/01 Worked in admin briefly after graduating and hated it. But like you say, if you work hard and persevere you can get somewhere better :)
BTW I can't believe you got the Eurodisney package so cheap, the one I looked at costs nearly £200! |
