Having taken redundancy from my previous job, back in April this year. I enrolled myself at college to take a qualification in HR, to back up my practical experience in this area. The qualification I am undertaking is the Certificate in Personnel Practice. In order to gain formal certification, students need to join the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, or CIPD for short. Membership ranges from the entry level or Affiliate membership, though several levels. When I pass my course, I will have Associate membership. There is then a two-year Graduate course, which on completion of that and a relevant career path would entitle me to a Membership ...

An appeal to anyone considering entering HR, please consider this: Whatever became of Personnel. Just the name HR implies that staff are a mere commodity, no better nor more worthy than the nuts and bolts in the factory. Just another commodity to be specified, measured and monitored, used and disposed of with the added inconvenience that the employer grudgingly has to pay for them again and again every month. Personnel used to be the friendly face of a company, sure hiring and firing, but also someone you could confide in, who knew your personal circumstances, a sympathetic shoulder and totally confidential.
