====How Many Teams====

As are many other games, netball is played by two teams.

====The Idea Of The Game====

As in most games, the idea is to score as many goals as possible. You do this by getting the ball through the net, which is at the top of a post.

====The Court====

Netball is played on a court which is devided into thirds. These thirds show where each player can go - which I will explain later. At either end, is a large semi-circle, known as the circle! This is where the goal posts are. In the centre third, is a small circle, which is where the game starts from.

====The Players====

Each team has seven players:

Goal Keeper
This is a defence postition. They are only allowed to go in the third which contains their goal - ie the one their opponents are trying to score in. It is their job to mark the Goal Shooter.

Goal Defence
Again a defending position. They can go in the same place as the Goal Keeper, but they can also play in the centre third too. It is their job to mark the Goal Attack

Wing Defence
As the name suggests, a defending position. They can go everywhere that the Goal Defence goes, EXCEPT in the circle. They mark the Wing Attack.

Centre
This is the most active position in the game. They can go anywhere except in the two shooting circles. It is both a defendng and attacking position and is responsible for taking the centre pass after a goal is scored or at the beginning of play. They mark the opposing Centre.

Wing Attack
An attacking position that can go in the centre third and the third in which the goal they are trying to score in is, but they can't go in the shooting circle. They mark the Wing Defence.

Goal Attack
This is probably one of the most important positions because this is an attacking and shooting position. They can go everywhere the Wing Attack can PLUS the circle. They mark the Goal D
efence.

Goal Shooter
The other shooter in the game. They can only go in the centre third in which they are shooting. They mark the Goal Keeper.

====The Rules====

No Contact
Netball is a non-contact game. If you do "barge" someone, or bump into them - and get seen! - you will be pulled up for obstruction. This will give play to the opposing team and the offender will have to stand by the side of the person with the ball until play has resumed.

Three Seconds
Once the ball is in your possession, you can only hold it for a maximum of three seconds. If you haven't passed it by that time, then play goes to the other side.

Three Feet
When marking someone, you must be three feet away from their landing foot before raising your arms. If not, it's obstruction again and the same penalties apply.

Re-Played Ball
If you catch the ball, drop it and catach it again, then this is seen as a repalyed ball. A free pass will be given to the opposite team. This can also be called if a shooter makes a shot at goal, but the post isn't touched and the same person catches the ball again.

Double Bounce
Pretty much the same as replayed ball. But instead of dropping and recatching, you bounce the ball twice or more before catching it.

Off Side
This comes into effect if your foot goes over the perimetre of where you are allowed. A free pass will be given to the opposition from the area you weren't supposed to be in.

Toss Up
This comes into effect if their is a smultaneous offence or if two people catch the ball at the same time. The umpire will take the ball, the two players stand face to face three feet apart with their hands by their sides. The umpire then throws the ball up and blows the whistle. Only when the whistle is blown can the players go for the ball. If one moves to early, then play goes to the other side. If they both catch it again, they d
o another toss up.

Foot Work
When you catch the ball, you must have a "landing foot". this basically means one foot that can't move again till you throw the ball. You can raise the foot again, but you just can't put it down. If you do break the rule, a free pass goes to the other side.

====Penalty Pass Or Penalty Pass or Shot?====

If a rule is broken outside the circle, it is automatically a penalty pass. However, if it's in the circle and a shooter has been obstructed, then it becomes a penalty pass or shot. This just means they can take a shot at goal with one defender out of action. If a player who isn't allowed in the circle goes off side, then a penalty pass will be given INSIDE the circle.

====Starting the Game====

A coin is usually tossed at the start of the game and the winner will almost certainly choose to have the first centre pass. the loser chooses which way they want to shoot first.

====Centre Pass====

At the beginning of the game Centre takes the first pass from the centre circle. The centre passes alternate between the teams after each goal is scored.

====Tactics====

A good one to remember is that just because the offence was made against you, you don't have to take a free pass. You can put the ball down and (hopefully) be unmarked for a bit. This can allow a shooter to get into a shooter to get into the circle without a marker.

At the centre, pass work out a system before the game starts so you know who's going to receive it. Avoid using ABBA becuase everyone knows that! And it's easy to work out.

====Types of Defence====

The Typical Mark
You stand with your back to your opponent and watch their movements over your shoulder. It allows you to have one eye on the ball and one on who your marking.

T-marking
You stand side ways on blocking three side of thier excape to a space.
<
br>Face On
You face them. This doesn't allow you to watch the ball so probably not the best.

Behind Them
This is good to use in the circle. Many shooters will receive overhead passes. But, if you're behind them and stay there, if they choose this and step back into you, you get a free pass!

====Types of Passing====

Chest Pass
Good powerful passes for short distances.

Shoulder Pass
Better for long passes.

Overhead Pass
This is long and loopy. Can be easily intercepted if not done well. Used to put the ball behind the person you're passing too. A good one to get theball int othe circle.

Bounce Pass
Instead of throwing the ball you bounce it. It's agood one for getting the ball into the circle.

Drop Pass.
Useful at the edge of the circle. Just drop the ball without much bounce, so the shooter can pick it up.

====Length of Play====

Usually play lasts around 30-40 minutes. It can either be made up of two halves or four quaters.

====Etiquette====

Always thank both umpires at the end of the match and congratulate the other side on a good game.

====Common Injuries====

Because of all the jumping, twisted and sprained ankles are very common. Then there's broken fingers, sprained fingers, sprained wrists, pulled muscles. I once broke my nose! Of course there's the usual cuts and bruises too.

====Why Play Netball?====

It's really good fun, and being a small team, it allows good freindships to be built. It's a great way to get fit the fun way.

====Which Position Is Best?====

Well for me it's Goal Attack. I played this position for eight years and grew to love it. Netball for me is a tactics game, competative but friendly.

====Where Can You Play?====

School, college, and unis all have teams. Then there's sports clubs, couty teams and if y
ou're good enough the international teams!

There we go a bit about netball, my favourite sport. Have fun if you decide to play and thanks for reading!

Hi there, although I thought the information in your review was good I was looking for something with more opinion and information I couldn't have found on any old netball site. If you do add anything please let me know and I'll pop back for another look
