Useful QualificationsNewest Review: ... in London, the University of Northumbria in Newcastle, and The Hamilton Kerr Institute in Cambridge. All of these are 2 or three years and are postgraduate. The first two courses take c.5 students a year, and the third takes 2 every other year. Now this may seem like a very low number qualifying, but there is a reason for that, the jobs are few and far between, so if you do qualify, believe me you'll be glad of this! When asked what I do for a living, I have started to say "I fix paintings", it seems easier that saying "I am a Painting Conservator". That is a conversation stopper I can tell you! The usual response is either "Oh really", meaning I haven't a clue what that is and really don't want to go into it now. Alternatively there is the "sorry?" response, which makes you think that you mumble. Which in all fairness I probably do... So what is a Painting Conservator?
