I recently picked one of these CD Writers up for my home computer. After using a friend`s Writer for some time, I decided to purchase my own. They are a really great idea. I use mine to make compilations of my music from my MP3`s. You can also use them to copy your original software to make back ups, NOT for illegally pirating games you understand. When choosing one for use at home, I decided to opt for a brand name writer because I have heard bad things about cheaper writers. Hewlett Packard were recommended to my by both the shop staff and friends as well as hearing about them before. My Writer reads data from the CD at 32 times speed. This Is quite quick compared to the already existing 16 Speed existing drive I have. There are quicker drives around but I dont think it matters too much. Writing speed is only 8 speed. This is quite slow compared to others on the market but my main drive is only 16 speed anyway so copying is restricted by that anyway. It cant copy quicker than 16 speed if the other drive cant read quicker than 16. Also, I have an older computer with Windows 98. It is a Pentium 2 and its a 233. It does not have the performance of a modern computer so the extra speed would be wasted. This is more than adequate for older computers who dont need the latest technology as a necessity. Installation is straightforward. It needs a USB socket to plug into. The software for installation has a step by step walkthrough. Hewlet Packard comes with its own CD writing product rather than using an after market add on such as Easy CD or Nero. It uses Create CD. It allows 3 options. MyCD creates Music CD`s and Data CD`s for use on other computers as well sa your own. Direct CD makes CD`s for use on your computer alone. HP Simple Backup makes a copy of your PC. Being an internal Drive, you do need to make sure you have a space in your computer for it or simply replace your existing dri
ve with it. Remember, if you want to copy your CD`s, you need to use both of them. At £120, I think its a good buy but it does not come with any extras such as labels or free CD`s. There are cheaper ones on the market but I would not risk it.

        • "poor software"

Unlike some of my friends, I am not a computer expert. I've certainly never had the courage to open up my computer and fiddle about inside. However, when I read opinions on dooyoo telling me that this writer came with straightforward instructions for inserting it in the machine, I thought I'd impress my savvy mates by showing them by doing something technological for myself. The HP instructions are indeed, superb. The writer comes with a video showing you exactly what you need to do, as well as a set of paper instructions to refer to as you do the job. In all, it took me about 30 minutes to get the thing up and running, and I was mightily impressed with my new technocrat status. However, it was then that the problems began. I burnt one CD successfully, but the process took ages, and I had to close down every single program on my computer to get it to begin. Then, the drive just stopped working. It would write about 2 tracks, then crash, the whole screen flashing an alarming red colour. Annoyingly, the HP software doesn't let you start burning again after this happens, so you end up with lots of coasters. Worse still, my 50x CD-Rom drive already installed in the computer was now not working at all. Thinking that the problem might lie in type of disc I was burning onto, I tried no less than 5 different types of CD-R media (costing me a fortune!) but had no joy. I now had 15 coasters (I exaggerate not), but unfortunately no audio CDs. So I rang the HP helpline. I was impressed by the friendliness and effort which the staff made, but after 4 hours on the phone, they had tried everything, and gave up, telling me to return the writer. They could, however, offer me no compensation for the damage which their product had done to my CD-Rom, which I now discovered was completely broken, nor any recompense for the money I had spent on phone calls (the helpline is a national rate number). I rang my computer-expert
friend. He told me that HP are a fantastic manufacturer when it comes to printers, but a laughing stock amongst the technologically able when it comes to CD-Writers. The software is notoriously bad, and my own experience does nothing to remove this impression! He took out the CD-RW, and the broken CD-Rom and fitted a much more reliable drive, called the Plex-writer which now works like a dream. The moral of the story? Buy Plextor Cd-Writers, and avoid the HP model like the plague, even if it means spending a few quid more. Oh, and always ask the computer experts first.

This CDRW'er is simplicity itself to install. The instructions come in 18 different languages in two manuals, installation s/ware is on 2 CD’s, one shows an installation video and then actually prints out the recommended jumper settings for your set-up! The other contains Hp’s Music-Match jukebox plus a CD Labeller (for CD & jewel-case). You also get a very large folded “story board” sheet detailing in words & graphics, how to install the HP CD-Writer Plus 9150i. The CD writing s/ware is an easy point & click operation with plenty of 'Go-back' options for those of a nervous disposition. This is an ideal buy for anybody requiring a reliable and easy to fit cdwriter. It is quiet and the drawer mechanism, compared to that of my DVD player, is like shutting a R.Royce’s door to that of a Ford Escort, catch my drift?? Just remember to connect the power cable to it BEFORE you screw your PC’s case back on………;-} Oops!!!

I went to PC World and they had an offer on (this was just after Christmas). This was down to £119.99. It is a 4rw x 8w x 32r CD-RW bundled with some really natty software including CD Direct and MyCD plus CD Labler II. I had looked on sites like DABS, etc. and some writers were cheaper, but I am a little fussy and wanted a name that I knew! I had been after a decent CD-RW for ages but had always been put off by the price and whether I would use it a lot or not. As time goes on I have noticed the drop in price of CD-RWs which is great for the consumer. You don't need to have the latest hardware to achieve excellent results. The kit comes with an internal IDE CD-RW drive, CDs with the software and installation package on, instructions and a blank CD-R for you to play with. Nothing extravagant but ample for my needs. Firstly you run the installation disk which tells you how to install the drive into your PC and what to do next. It is a video on-line and is simple to follow. Afterwards click on the Install option and just follow the prompts. So - I installed my drive and let Windows find it for me. The installation CD runs again - as before follow the instructions. It will complete the set-up for you. Within half an hour my CD-RW was up and running with no problems. However - if you are a novice, get someone you know who knows about PCs to help - you will at least feel more at ease! The software is great that comes with it. Again a very easy wizard approach. I have made some data CDs, formatted a CD-RW disc and made my first music CD. In addition, I used Rave Ejay and copied on of my creations to CD and it plays very happily on the Hi-Fi downstairs! Great CD-RW, great supporting software and excellent installation guides. You will not be disappointed and it is fast enough for most peoples needs! The current price on DABS by the way is £111.62 which is excellent for such quality :)

The 'HP 9150i' is an internal Cd-Writer from Hewlett Packard. It specifications are 8x 4x 32x. For those who do not understand this sort of thing that all means that if creating a CD using a write-once CD it has the capability of 'burning' the data onto the disc at 8 times its normal speed. Therefore an 8 minute song would be burnt onto the CD in 1 minute. 4x means that a CD which has the capability of being used like a video cassette (can be recorded over and over) will record at four times standard speed once it has been written on the first time. 32x is the speed of the CD drive, most stand alone CD drives will be operating at this speed or higher now. The drive itself is a great entry in the market of CD writers. It is really easy to install with big colour glossy instruction manuals showing how to connect up the various cables (it comes with a ide cable incase you need to attach it to another device). The instructions cover things like how to use the cables should you want the drive as a master or slave. Screws are provided to safely secure the drive inside your case. Software is also present with the drive. You get HP Music match Jukebox. This is a fantastic product which makes it really easy to create CD's from many popular sound file formats, such as MP3. Getting the tracks in the right order is also very easy. Not only being a CD creator but the software also doubles as an alternative to Windows Media Player and has most features it has such as playlists. Provided you have 32mb of Ram, and Windows95 (64mb if you are using one of the Windows 2000 O/S') As for price, well it varies greatly from around £130 to £160 so shop around to get a good deal. If you are strapped for cash and are looking for a good starter then this is a good model to go for. It is by a well-known name and is competitively priced for other drives with the same specifications. But if cash is not an issue HP, and many other compan
ies do drives at around £200-300 which will also be faster. Yet if portability is an issue you could always go for the Iomega external USB device, nowhere near as fast, but no other name comes close when removable storage is the issue, this retails at about £200, but can be bought mail order for about £180. All-in-all a brilliant buy at the price. I got mine the sales at only £120 - so glad I did.

I received this drive as a gift though i believe the price paid was around £109+vat. I have plenty of experience in the installation and setup of computer hardware and software and have had many frustrating experiences with parts missing in the past. Intsallation was very easy. This will depend upon your system but i had my drive fitted, the software installed and i was burning my first cd all in the space of about 45 minutes. If you are a first time user of this media then you will appreciate the simple to use software HP includes. However, more experienced buyers and professionals may find it so basic it is insulting. That said, it was up and running first time so to me that is much better than having bundled software with all the bells and whistles. In short, a very high standard drive but with basic software, forgivable though due to its giveaway price. If you don't have a CDRW already, this is the one for you.

              Advantages

              Disadvantages

I bought this drive for ATS2990 (EUR217.32) in Vienna and have been very pleased with it to date. Having installed a lot of hardware in machines before, I have no problems installing hardware, but the diagnostic software supplied will inform those without experience as to what they need to set jumper switches to etc and how to connect it all. Additionally there is a video (on CD Rom) of how exactly to install the drive in step by step detail, as well as information factsheets to make this a very easy peripheral to install. Sadly the software provision was a bit on the basic side, as the software shipped is an entry level programme, written by HP, whereas other companies ship their burners with Nero 5 or Adaptec Easy CD Creator. For CDRW disks, there was a copy of DirectCD, updated for compatibility with Win 98, and so the software was adequate but not outstanding. However I added Nero for ATS699 (EUR 50) and now have everything I need in terms of software. I have found the burner easy to use, and very reliable, and am, touching wood, yet to experience any buffer underrun problems. The only downside is that the drive doesn't support over burning, but this is usually <
br> not an issue in any case.
