Advantages: No more missed calls!!, No more arguments over phone lines!!
Disadvantages: No Caller Display
Anyone who uses the internet a lot and yet doesn't have two phone lines will know the difficulties that this involves with missed phone calls etc. If you live in a house with other people then you can imagine the arguments caused by you constantly tying up the phone lines whilst you are surfing and they are waiting for a call... Well that used to be how it was in my household, but not anymore thanks to this wonderful piece of equipment from Complementary Technologies. The Internet Alert 510(as it is called) is a little orange box which saves you a whole heap of big problems. It uses BT's 'Call Waiting' service to monitor the phone line and detect when somebody is trying to dial in to your house. When it finds that someone is, a light flashes and the unit emits a loud beeping sound giving you the option to either answer the call or to just surf on by ignoring your children's annoying friends and getting on with your dooyoo-ing. To answer the call you just pick up the phone as you would normally do and the IA510 cuts off the internet and allows you to talk normally as if it was never there. When the call is finished, simply return to you PC and hit refresh and you are ready to go again...it really is as simple as that! Priced at £29.95(plus £2.95 p&p), the IA510 holds an enormous advantage over the prospect of investing in a second phone line in mere price alone. You will also have to have Call Waiting enabled on your phone line, which is around £4 a quarter the last time I bothered to look properly, so its a huge price difference. Installation is simple and fast. Plug the IA510 into the telephone jack socket in the wall and connect the phone and internet cable to the provided sockets. Then plug in the device's own power cable into the nearest wall socket and a slight tweak in you modem settings and you are ready to go - that simple. Instructions come with the unit and are pretty straightforward so I didn't have a
ny trouble installing it at all. One minor gripe I do have about the unit is what I see as a simple oversight on behalf of the company. It would have been better in my opinion to be able to see who is dialing in to the house on the unit, rather than simply being notified of a call. I have to answer all calls in the off chance that it might be something important and usually find that its someone I would rather have ignored...simple caller display would have made the unit 10 times better in my opinion. But...its the only device of its kind which I have seen to date and at this price it can't really be argued with. To me its invaluable, and no doubt to many of thsoe who read this op. too. Check it out...its well worth it! ~~Notes~~ As far as I am aware, this item is only available direct from the manufacturers themselves at the moment - if anyone knows differently then I am willing to be corrected on the matter. If you are interested in the unit, then it can be found at: http://www.ctl-bolton.com where you will also find all other relative information such as company address, tel no. etc. which you may or may not require.

paule23 - 27/07/01 Sounds OK but seems a bit expensive just to find out if someone is trying to call you. I always think if it's that important they will call back later! |
