The series includes the Passport 4430, 4450 and 4455. The 3-slot Passport 4430 and 5-slot Passport 4450 are multiservice branch access devices. The Passport 4455 is a higher performance version of the 5-slot 4450 platform intended to serve as central switching node in 4400-only networks. In larger networks, this role would be performed by Passport 6400/7400 products. The Passport 4400 series introduces a new, highly efficient, standards-based link protocol called Passport Access Network Link (PANL), which optimizes link utilization (generally the most significant cost component for branch access) for multimedia traffic. The Passport 4400 series of multiservice access devices is complemented by the Nortel Networks Passport 6400 series of ATM enterprise network switches and the Nortel Networks Passport 7400 series of asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) multiservice switches that provide high fan out point-of-presence (POP) solutions for service providers.
