The Personal Content Cache can be deployed in several places throughout the service providers' or corporate network, including the Access Point of Presence (PoP) or corporate branch office, the regional data center, and the Internet data center. The PCC provides distinct benefits at each location. The Personal Content Cache is unique in its ability to support forward or transparent proxy, and reverse proxy modes simultaneously on the same cache. The availability of these two functions on one appliance adds flexibility and additional cost savings to any deployment of the Personal Content Cache. Corporations and service providers can assign specific PCCs to offer reverse proxy streaming services to their end users, while offering general Internet content caching services from the same PCCs simultaneously. With increasing market adoption of live and on-demand streaming media, network slowdowns become even more obvious. The Personal Content Cache was created to support both live stream-splitting and on-demand streaming technologies. In either mode, the end results are accelerated delivery of streaming content and bandwidth savings, since end users' requests are served from the nearest caching location. The Personal Content Cache also has a number of features designed to ensure that quality of service is maintained. The PCC's Content Pinning feature ensures that specified, defined content is permanently stored in the PCC's disk and/or RAM space until it is purged. This provides greater control over certain cached content ensuring that it is prioritized, as well as ensuring higher availability and faster delivery of specific content, and enables service providers to offer service level guarantees. Additionally, the PCC supports standard IP Type of Service tagging (IP ToS), which enables service providers to deliver quality of service for IP traffic. Content filtering allows the enterprise to control access to certain types of content that may be inappropriate to the work environment. It also enhances employee productivity and conserves network resources for business purposes. The Personal Content Cache is able to filter content based on URLs as well as subscribed categories of content.
