This is my favourite CD-RW drive! I have installed and used many different brands of CD-RW drive in the past, but one of the best in my opinion is this drive by Sony. I consider this drive on parr with Plextor, that's right Plextor! Plextor is known as the best CD-RW drive manufacturer on the planet which means I have a high opinion of Sony. I have been using this drive for almost a year now, and coupled with Adaptec EZ CD Creator, makes for an awesome duo. I almost exclusively burn audio at 10x, and this burner does it without any quality loss over writing at 2x or 4x, which is amazing. It does not employ BURN-Proof technology, but I have never experienced a buffer under-run with this drive (but that is maybe due in part to the performance of the hard-drives and the rest of my system). I have only one tip for those installing this burner themselves: Be sure that you enable DMA on your hard drives if they support it (that can be found in the properties of your hard drive in the device manager). I have seen all too many times that coasters are created because of the lack of use of this great feature.

        Advantages

        Disadvantages

I recently purchased this Sony CRX145E. It is a CD-RW and can therefore copy, (read and write) CDs. The drive itself is amazingly simple to install. At first I knew nothing about the internal workings of my computer and her Mother Board but once I was told I would have to pay somewhere in the region of £250 to have it installed for me, I decided it was time to learn for my self. (I'll explain at the end) Once the drive is installed and the computer is rebooted, the BIOS is automatically updated for you and the drive installs itself in literally seconds. The software which accompanied this product is 1st rate. It has a different program for every type of situtaion involving copying that you could think of. This ranges from Audio CD building to putting Video footage on CD or to just back up your Hard Drive, its all there on just one CD which is included in the price of the drive. So far I have found numerous uses for my drive. These include the use of Uploading MP3s from sites such as www.Napster.com to make either compilations or full albums. Also included is a program called WinOnCD. This is by far the most superior as it lets you put anything on CD in the standard ISO format which can be used for anything (including PC, MAC and PSX ;-) The drive can be used as a standard 32X cd drive to play music or to play games, or you can use the 10x/4x to make your own CDs. If your thinking about buying a CD-RW drive, I greatly urge you to give this serious consideration. ----------------------- INSTALLATION OF DRIVE ----------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------- Now for the installation of the drive. I am just going to try and describe the installation of the drive for you to show how easy to do it is(trust me, if I can do it, you can.) OK. 1st you need to know a little bit about the inside of you computer.
------------- BACKGROUND ------------- Your Standard CD drive is connected to your motherboard by a flat ribbon cable called an IDE cable. Your Harddrive is also connected to the motherboard but using a second IDE cable. (as is your floppy drive but completely ignore this as it is not relevant for the installation of this drive) In almost all cases, the Harddrive is called the PRIMARY MASTER. This means that it is connected directly to the motherboard.(this simply means, one end of the cable is in the motherboard, the other end is connected to the hard drive.) This makes it the MASTER. Therefore your Standard CD drive is SECONDARY MASTER (one end of cable in the motherboard, the other end in the drive.) ------------------------------- CONNECTING THE SONY DRIVE ------------------------------- Sony reccommend that you connect their drive to the SECONDARY IDE cable(the one your standard CD drive is already on. Half way along this IDE cable should be a 40 pin FEMALE connecter. This is what goes into the back of your New Sony Drive (Into the 40 pin MALE connecter on the back of the drive.) Because your new drive is joined half way along the IDE cable, it is called the SECONDARY SLAVE.(If you do not want to keep your old drive, your new drive can become your SECONDARY MASTER. ------------- THE REST ------------- Now simply plug in the power cable into the back of your CD Drive and connect your New Drive to your sound Card(identically to your original drive) and that is all there is to it. Now turn on your power and the drive will automatically be loaded in, you won't have to do a thing. ----------------------------------------------------------- BUT PLEASE DO NOT RELY ON WHAT I SAY, ALTHOUGH THIS IS EXACTLY HOW I SET UP MY DRIVE, AND IT WORKS FINE FOR ME, YOUR COMPUTER MAY BE DIFFERENT INSIDE!!! TO SEE THE EXACT DRIVE

I upgraded to this product from the old Spressa 4/2/24 and I must say that the same quality and reliability that the old Spressa possessed are present here. It is extremely easy to install - took me about 20 minutes for the entire operation - and very user friendly. The instructions are superb as is the included burning program, Sony's CD Right. I have so far burned approximately 100 cds with this product using Memorex, Sony, and Smart and Friendly Media (4x and 8x type media) and had only 1 failure with a Smart and Friendly 8x media. I imagine it was the media's fault and not the burners. As for cd-rw capabilities, this product has been just great. I never encounter any buffer underruns. I would highly recommend this product to everyone who wants a fast, reliable cd-rw drive.
