Advantages: Instantly Recognisable Improvement in performance, Relativley inexpensive, Easy to install
Disadvantages: Some systems can only take a certain amount of RAM, Gets more expensive the more RAM you want to buy
Want to improve the performance of your computer? Then, adding more RAM will certainly set you on the way! RAM stands for Random Access Memory, and it's function is very simple. All of the programs you have on your computer are stored on these RAM boards, which are attached to your motherboard. Basically, the more programs you have will make your system run slower, simply because it takes the computer more time to search through all the files you have. Take the example of a librarian being asked to search for a book beginning with the letter B. The more books in the library that begin with the letter B, the longer it will take for the Librarian to find the book they are looking for, whereas the less books they have beginning with the letter B, the quicker the desired book will be found. Apply this to your RAM. If you have more storage space, the computer will be able to find the information faster. RAM comes in various sizes, from 64MB upwards, usually 128Mb, 256Mb and 512Mb. It's up to you how much you put in, obviously the more RAM the better improvement you'll see, although the price goes up the more RAM you buy. RAM is easy to install, just take off the outer casing of your system, and you cannot miss where your original RAM is stored, it's exactly like the one in your hand! Just clip it into place ( there should be space on your motherboard for it) and the improvement should be instantly noticeable. To ensure the system has taken notice of this extra RAM, check out your system stats. and the new amount of memory you have should be on view.

- 18/02/02 Nice op, but you might want to mention wearing an anti-static band to protect the electronics in your motherboard. Either wear one of those or hold onto something metal whilst you tinker. Cheers Sy |

- 18/02/02 I know RAM comes in all sizes, but my opinion was on how RAM could boostyour system performance, and I dont think 1MB or smaller would boost your performance. |
