When you have a format that's more compatible than another then it comes out on top. I don't think you can justify the heading of this forum. Mp3 vs Minididc. One is a file format, the other is harware that uses the file format.

Many people who have internet connection and a minidisc download the music and then put it on their minidisc. They co-exist. However, mp3's can also be put on mp3 players. Minidisc vs Mp3 Players would have been a more appropriate title.

Still, with a minidisc music can only be copied onto a disc via a PC or hifi system. If you want perfect sound, that is. And Minidisc players are not in everyones price range, they are expensive.

The price of mp3 Players are cheaper and I believe the momery capacity will increase and the price come down.

Mp3's can be uploaded to your minidisc, they can be copied onto cd's as mp3's and played on mp3 CD Players, or they can be copied as CDA format and played on regular cd players. But this is the future, Aiwa have brought out a portable cd player that plays re-writable cd's(read my article on the Aiwa portable cd player). I believe in the future there will be mp3 CD Players that play re-writables. Therefore, you will be able to copy your favourite songs onto your cd and if you get fed up just re-copy new songs onto it. The big bonus is you get about 150 songs onto 1 cd.

Currently mp3 is the most compatible form of music mainly because it can be heard in so many ways, and they are alot cheaper and easier to get hold of.

As a survey why not write a quick comment stating which is better, mp3 or Minidisc

The point made about file format v recording hardware is very valid.

I would however take up a few points:

Since when were personal minidisc recorders more pricely than mp3 players? The cost of the units is very comparible, and when you factor in the extortionate memory costs of mp3 players as compared to minidisc. Its no contest who come out on top. The price of memory for mp3 is still not falling. Who wants a personal music player with only 30odd minutes of music? If you want a 64mb or 128mb flash card it will cost a bomb whereas minidisc can give you 160mb of memory for as little as £1.50.

As for the hardware format of the future, I would very much disagree with the CD/Mp3 conclusion. The whole point of Mp3 players and Minidisc players is portability. The bottom line is that Personal CD players are cumbersome pieces of kit to put it mildly. More likely is the dominance of minidisc as a recording format since now, Mp3 files can be recorded seamlessly using a soundcards optical out or devices such as Xitels DG1 www.xitel.com. With any recording format there is a certain element of you going physically to the hardware. Only advances in mobile telephony will change this making mp3 files downloadable to your phone directly, the phone acting as a phone and Mp3 player(see Virgin/Siemens model).
Minidisc has to come out tops. The only thing for Mp3 is non-moving parts, but with 40 second antishock and improvements to even this on the way, its really no contest
