Advantages: good bright colours, can be cheap
Disadvantages: expensive unless you buy mail order
It always amazes me how many of my friends still buy their film one at a time from high street chains like WHSmiths and Boots. For those who do know their stuff about films and suppliers - look away now - this is only a rough guide to get people started. I can't top the op that is currently holding a crown for listing the pros and cons of every fuji film in the world, ever - so here's all you need to know - nutshell style. I'm a big Fuji fan because not only do they have the most astounding range of films but I find that in crude terms, Fuji makes things brighter and Kodak makes things warmer - and, of the two I prefer brighter pics. Read any film carton for advice on how to use the film you choose - my only advice is to try something new. Films get updated and modified quite often - you might surprise yourself. If you fancy yourself as a bit of an amateur photographer your best move will be into slide film. If you ever decide to try and sell your work - most publishers deal in slide film rather than print. Fuji Provia is a great place to start but for a real wow factor go for Velvia - it exaggerates reds and greens to superlucious standards and makes average shots into winners! But here's the best advice. Look in the back of any photography magazine and you'll find a whole host of companies that offer mail order film for roughly half the price of High Street shops - sometimes even less. Obviously being mail order, you are expected to buy in bulk - but this just helps keep costs down. Club together with a couple of mates and not only will you get your film at ridiculously low price but delivered to your door for a a couple of pounds plus the price of the magazine that you first heard about them in! - split between you. As a guide - you can pick up a 36 Fuji 100 or 200 for about £1.20 if you buy in a pack of ten. If you want to be really professional keep your stash of films i
n the fridge until you need them - it makes them last longer.

- 06/09/02 I am definitely returning my Kodak Gold Ultra and swapping for Fuji Superia! |

- 13/12/01 I recently started using Fuji Superia and I was pleasantly suprised by how much better it was than Kodak Gold. Only about 50p more as well, and I can get it from Boots. I'll wait a while though before I move onto Velvia... |

- 26/09/01 that's what I meant by sharing the cost with friends - you might only want three or four each. It's still cheaper to pay part of the postage than go to the shops. |
