Advantages: helpful in an emergency

Disadvantages: annoy others

Before I start out on this opinion on phones let it be known that I do own one, and have done for about five years (Luckily not the same one!).

It occurs to me that mobile phones get a somewhat bad press in the media these days. Everyday we are hearing about safety concerns from the actual phone itself and also from users sending nasty text hate mail. All this would probably make you run away from the nearest user as he approaches you with that piece of black plastic stuck to his ear.

If you get past those scares then you are left as a social outcast whenever using them yourself. How many times do you still get people staring at you whenever you receive or make a call? This in a day and age when mobile use is so common. You still get looked at like you have just stepped off an alien ship, tutted at, or treated like a poser with a new toy. It is nearly always the old lady with the heavy shopping trolley bag in tow, someone that wouldn?t know one end of the phone from another, and wouldn?t want to.

Mobile phones have become more a part of life because we all live such busier lives these days. I am not going to say that they will ever be essential, but there will always be situations where having a mobile phone could be the difference between life and death.

Health worries do need addressing quickly and concrete evidence produced as to the implications of use. Then appropriate legislation can be taken to ensure manufacturers build the things safely. It is safe to say that mobiles are here to stay and people will have to get used to them whether they choose to use them or not.

Recently the tarrif providers have announced that the cost of mobiles is to go up as they have been subsidising the cost over the past few years, actually selling them for less than they were buying from the phone manufacturers. They say that they are unable to take this cost any further. Unfortunately I believe it's more to do with the fact that t
hey will sell the mobiles at any price, as more and more people want one (as a newcomer to mobiles or as a replacement). They will simply reap the benefits of the craze for total communication, it's their business and good luck to them, but I wish they wouldn't try to fob us off with the price hike excuse that they can't afford to carry on selling them cheaply!

Too true. Now the mobile operators infrastructure is in place I guess they should be reaping massive profits through, for example, the explosion in text messaging. The operators were fools, and have only themselves to blame for paying billions for the next generation of licences. They have no excuse for trying to price pre-pay phones out of the equation.

Interesting op, isn't part of the problem that a considerable section of pre-paid mobile phone owners don't use them enough and keep them for 'emergencies' - therefore v. little profit, if any.

You're obviously better informed to speak than me! I'll look forward to the opinion! Thanx
