Advantages: Essential for emergencies

Disadvantages: None

Mobile telecommunication. Just a few decades ago, this concept was beyond imagination. But since its release about ten years ago, these little mobile phones have become an essential everyday item. Just like your toothbrush or your car. What would we all do without them now? Most of us would manage, but they're a luxury that nowadays most of us can afford and they have fitted very nicely into our lives.

We have watched mobiles evolve before our very eyes and it's all happened incredibly quickly. From the original Motorola "brick" mobile that weighed the equivelent of a bag of sugar, took up half the room in your bag and definitely wouldn't fit into your pocket, to the current Nokia 8210 which is not the lightest, but is smaller than a packet of cigarettes and fits into the smallest pocket without you even noticing it's there.

This is the age of advancing technology. Most of us are embracing it with open arms as more and more affordable luxuries are being put on the shelves for us to buy. However, mobile phones, whatever type you choose, are becoming a little more important than just a luxury to show off to your friends down the pub. These little inventions are becoming life-savers. Telecommunication is always on hand for the next unexpected crisis. I'll run through a few of their most important aspects:-

a) I do not have statistics, but I'm sure that the emergency services have been contacted a lot quicker at scenes of genuine emergencies than ever before with the aid of a telephone being at such close hand.

b) Those of us that own mobile phones are safe in the knowledge that we are able to be contacted if an emergency elsewhere occurs. We can be quickly and immediately contacted whatever the situation.

c) It's safer, especially so for female drivers travelling alone, moreso at night. Whether it be a journey across town, or 200+ miles across the country, in the event of breaking down,
we know that we can call for assistance without even having to leave the car. In this day and age, this is a godsend.

d) If your younger ones carry mobile phones, you know that you can always get in touch them if you are worried, or they can contact you in an emergency.

The advantages of owning a mobile phone are vast. I have only specified the main emergency aspects that a mobile can vitally help us with, but there are many more.

No one can argue that mobiles are expensive anymore either. Although some of the more flashy types of mobile are costly, you do not need the latest model with oodles of features including a hundred different ring tones and an internet service to appreciate the immediate benefits of having a mobile. Nationwide network coverage has improved to about 98% now. Prices are going down lower and lower these days, and many companies offer so many free months line rental, with rental as low as about £9.99 a month, plus hundreds of free minutes, and more and more competitive packages. There's bound to be one out there for your needs. Call costs and line rental have all been lowered significantly, and with many companies, you no longer pay for the actual handset, connection, all the gadgets like a carrying case, in-car charger, hands-free kit etc... The best companies for these deals in my opinion are:-

"Dial-a-phone" - advertises in all major
newspapers and magazines
for their numerous
exceptional deals. All
deals are done on a free-
phone number (0800 00 00
77) or at their internet
site www.dialaphone.co.uk

"Phones4U" - this company has retail
outlets in most major
towns. You can deal with
them at local stores or

at their internet site
www.phones4u.co.uk

It has never been easier or cheaper to purchase a mobile phone than it is now. My experience of them is that they are essential. Being a young female student, I regularly drive alone on long journeys to see family, or friends at other universities. Most of my friends travel long-distance alone a lot too and we all drive second-hand cars which are a little more susceptable to breaking down! In the event of breaking down, we know that we're safe and do not have to get out of the car to call the breakdown services. Lock the doors, and call the RAC! It's much safer whether you break down on the motorway, or in the middle of nowhere, day or night. It happens to all of us at some point.

I recently broke down for the first time. I was on the M27 at about 10pm, deep in the forrests of Hampshire, travelling alone, just me and my parrot, Monica, whose cage was strapped into the passenger seat. (She loves travelling with me, looking out the window and listening to the radio!) It was terrifying and I don't know what I would have done if I would have had to get out of my car, leave Monica, and walk about three miles up the hard shoulder to get to an emergency AA phone on the side of the road. I was so grateful to have my mobile which from the comfort of my car I could call the RAC direct and get them to come to me within about 40 minutes.

I own a Nokia 5110, one of the older models, but I've owned it for about two years. The handset, charger and connection were free with free minutes and cheap line rental on Vodafone. It's fairly light, and small and an essential everyday item which is always about my person.

Mobile phones are power to the people. We can help ourselves in even the worst situation just by being prepared and owning one, even if it is just for emergencies only. Mobiles are indespensible to those who have become accustomed to them and we have
to accept that this is the future of telecommunications and they are the simply the most useful things anyone can own.

Thanks for reading.
