Advantages: Cheap package price at the time.
Disadvantages: All the above.
We bought the above TV (28" wide screen Nicam Dolby suround)back in March 2000, as we thought it was about time for us to get onto wide screen and to replace our still hard working over 8 years old 20" JVC. We had a good package deal of £655 for the TV and the Nicam VCR. At the time this was the most competitive deal we could find for a comparable product. The TV came with its own cabinet stand and the other plus point for us was the closable glass door to keep an adventurous toddler's fingers away from the video. Setting it up was straight forward. A few days after we installed it we realised that it was not as good as we expected. Our TV has 3 main problems, each as irritating as the other: 1. It keeps turning itself on and off at random in stand by mode and when it is on. 2. We keep getting yellow and blue stains appearing on the screen. 3. The remote control is extremely directional sensitive (unlike our old JVC) unless you are standing right in front of it it doesn't work. Scottish Power where we bought it from have sent an Engineer out on 2 separate occasions and all the problems still remain. The set still turns itself on and off at random and the Engineers modifications have been inefective. The staining is apparently caused by magnetism affecting the screen but there are no magnetic fields anywhere near the TV, the Engineer demagnetised the screen but the problem remains. The built in demagnetiser doesn't seem man enough for the job. Apparently there is nothing we can do about the remote control as the Engineer told us that the Hitachi remotes are very sensitive! We are not sure if we have bought the Friday afternoon model and woudl be interested to know if anyone else has had similar problems. Not impressed, although the video is OK so far.

- 01/09/01 The only Hitachi TV I've had suffered constant tube problems. It was so grim , I gave it to my sister (The final insult to anything). Their audio equipment seems OK though. |
