Last year I bough an mp3 player and I took it back the next day cause it was shite. I was told by curry?s that I would play WMA and it didn?t. Then I bought a new style of Walkman called a NET MD Player and I have to say it was the greatest thing I had ever bought! It connected to your computer via the usb port and it came with software that made it easy to transfer the music to the MD. And you could you long lay so you could fit on 2 times or 4 times the amount that you normally could. The downside is that you can only transfer music back to the same computer and it only allowed you to check out songs 3 times e.g. to 3 different disks and to checkout that same song again you had to check the song back in from one of the disks. (Its some copywrite law I think!) The battery life is also great from 1 AA battery I got around 60hours and then u just recharge it! All in all the Sony MD Walkman is great. Unfortunately some thief though the same and I got mugged of it! But I?m buying a better one soon, when Asda decides to pay us, and when they stock them!

So far all my sound equipment is sony and so far I have had no problems with any of it. Sony have proved to me they are a quality manufacturer and my latest purchase a portable md recorder has given me no gip. It is truly superb and the medium is fantastic. The fact that I can carry about seven albums and the device to play them on stashed about my person without the ugly bulge is brilliant. I really like the innovation that is minidisc all my friends have them and nearly all of them are sony. Now all of us have made totally independent decisions and come up with the same idea buy the best you can afford and without a doubt this is always a sony product.

If you own a Somy MD Walkman player or recorder, it is still worth looking towards owning a Sony MD deck in the long term. This is important if you do a lot of compilation MDs, because they handle the editing much more easier than the portable recorders. The editing trick that you can perform with the deck is to chisel off any "dead air" at the start and end of tracks. This is done by "dividing" at the points where the music starts and stops, then erasing the silent spots at the start and end if the music. This is best done before you title the songs and move them around. This then means that you can have songs that blend into each other but still are able to search them out. Also, if you put a Sony MD Walkman into Shuffle-Repeat mode and play an MD which has been edited in this manner, the songs will appear to be one after another even though they are played in shuffle-play mode. This is because Sony makes use of the "read-ahead" buffer feature at all times that the MD Walkman is in use. Also the Sony MD car-audio equipment supports this style of playback; and I have heard that the Sony MDX-65 6-stack MD changer will maintain a seamless shuffle-play mode across all discs that are in the MD changer.

Thid id where the Mini Disk advantages and disadvantages lie over the MP3 player and why I believe if your looking for the best way to listen to your music on the move you should go for the MD over the MP3 Player. I have owned the Sony MZ-R55 Mini Disk player for over a year and its never let me down, where as my Sony MP3 player has caused me plenty of hassle. The battery lasts forever in a MD and if you do run dry you can always just the AA batteries, where with an MP3 this is not possible you need to re charge the player. Also with the MP3 you have limited amount of time for your music the chips will set you back a fortune, where the disks for the MD are cheaper and u can buy them in pack which means endless listening time. Yes, the MP3 does have the advantage that you can download music direct from the Internet onto your player but theres nothing stopping you from downloading your music to your computer and then recording it to a mini disk its just as simple really. The mini disk may be a little heavier to carry in your pocket but I believe this is worth it for the quality and all the little extras the mini disk can offer over the MP3. Mini disks can also be used in most new hi-fi's where as the MP3 can not. So there you go in my opinion the Mini Disk at the present time rules over the MP3 by a long way......

            Advantages

            Disadvantages

Whilst the minidisc format is doubtless a great idea and a considerable marketing coup for Sony, I feel there are some issues that haven't been adequately addressed. I am the proud owner of an MZ E300 portable player, which, I'm sorry to say, has yet to be chronicled on Dooyoo- nevertheless, I am going to use this as the basis of my 'opinion'. The quality of sound produced is impressive- let there be no bush beating in this department, however- to say that this is as good as cd, would be an exaggeration. Very good it may be,-certainly better than tape (as it inevitably would be), but not quite CD. (i.e- you can hear a hiss in places, depending) One of the biggest selling points of minidisc portables is inevitably going to be the novelty factor- exactly the same as when the walkman and discman first graced the highstreet. But, at the end of the day, you have to ask yourself whether there's really going to be a significant advantage over the bog standard discman. Afterall, you're going to have to copy your cds onto minidisc- a lengthy process (and surely a regression towards the awkwardness of tape). But then, the devices are tiny- literally no larger than an actual minidisc- you can put them (pretty much) anywhere- eliminating the need for tangled trailing wires to an extent. The battery lives are impressive- a single AA battery, with typical use managed to last for about 6 weeks. Oh, and despite their size and appearance, they are surprisingly robust(!) They make look as if they're going to break into a thousand tiny pieces of japanese origin, but to Sony's credit, they don't. All in all, I 'd be inclined to say that while they may well be impressive and there is a certain 'je ne sais quoi' in having one (and using it infront of other people!)- they are ultimately a little superfluous to all except those who simply have to have the latest shiny imports from the land of the rising sun.

              Advantages

              Disadvantages

Minidisks in my opinion are one of the best ever gadgets to ever come out of Japan, and are also one of the best developements in Hi-fi in years. They build on the strengths of compact disks, and eliminate most of the humble CD's short-fallings, such as bulk, easy scratching/ruining of a cd, and easy digital recording... although there are recordable cds, they're just too much hassle along side tapes and minidisk. If you need any other reason to make the conversion to mindisk, let me remind you that the prices have plummeted during the last year, and you can now pick up a minidisk PLAYER for under £80, and a PLAYER/RECORDER for under £120, about half the price they were a year ago. Also, take note that a pocket sized minidisk player can be run through your hi-fi and deliver similar quality to a full sized deck. I can but sing minidisk's praises, they are ace. The only downside is that they're a bit fiddly to use in all but basic playback, but it's a fault that I can easily live with. JOIN THE REVOLUTION!!

Sony where the ones who lead the way for minidisc. They researched, invested and re-invested and what did we get? Shear Excellence! I own two minidisc players/recorders, one is a Sharp and the other Its a Sony and boy! do you notice the difference. Size, sounds, looks, everything its all perfect. I really have to say well done, because Sony deserves it. They bring use the forefront of technologie with style. They have invested and re-invested to bring use the best. If you are considering a MD player/recorder you should only consider a Sony. Well Done SONY

                Advantages

                Disadvantages

This Sony mini disk looks good and is cheap however I would not advise anyone to buy it, or any other mini disk player. The mini disk was supposed to revolutionise the music industry and eradicate cassettes, however this is not the case. When Sony invented the mini disk they also, needless to say, hyped it up phenomenally and put a great big price on the product. They are not all they cracked up to be and it is difficult to transfer tracks onto a mini disk and if anything goes it can be expensive to replace. The product looks good and has superb sound quality but still don't buy one unless you really really want to.

                Disadvantages

If you want to record a CD on to a much smaller mini disk all you need is a wire from your CD player to your mini disk player and Sony supplies a lead when you buy a Sony minidisk. It is also much faster than a cd player a good feature on the Sony ones is the anti shock so if you drop it you can still use it and it is not broken. MD technology is great you don’t have anymore poor sound, fast forwarding and no more big player

                Advantages

                Disadvantages

The Mini Disc has been around for a few years now, and is growing more popular. I have one of the earlier MD players (MZ-R35), and it’s just as good as the latest models that are around today. It’s small, not too heavy and has good output. I always seem to end up buying Sony equipment usually because it’s good quality, doesn’t break (usually) and not overly expensive. The battery life on the Sony players are extremely good, it lasts for hours, and the included battery pack makes it go even further. The output is very good, crisp and clear, even at stupidly high volumes the player copes well. Compared to some of the Sharp models, the players read the TOC very quickly when a new disc is inserted. It only takes a few seconds to play from a cold start. They record very well, but this can take it out of the battery, so use the mains adapter if you’re going to record a whole CD. The included digital cable with the players makes recording your CDs quick, easy and excellent quality. The players have many features, Mega Bass, AVLS (hardly ever used) and syncro recording when using the digital cable. Track marks are recorded automatically making digital recording a breeze.

                Advantages

                Disadvantages

If you are into the MP3 world you will know that you can get any track in MP3 and play it on your computer. And with a portable MP3 player you can make it portable. But hang on with my 2 year old MD I can make my MP3's portable and with more than 32 mins at a time. I have an analogue port on my soundcard so am restricted to analogue recordings (which is still very good) but with more and more soundcards having Digital outputs a copy to mini disk is so easy. So why is MD better than Portable MP3. 1. MD disks have 74 mins per disk, MP3 has 32 mins. 2. MD disks cost £1 per 74 mins MP3 flash cards cost about £50 for 32 mins. 3. Both are re-recordable, but MD can record other sound rather than just MP3's (Voice is just one other) Just a few reasons to help you decide between the two.

                Disadvantages

MD technology is brilliant, no more fast forwarding, poor sound quality, bulky walkmans, breakable tapes- MD is here. Until I bought a MD Player I was taking my walkman to school every day and quite frankly it was a pian in the ass. Now I take my tiny little portable minidisc player. The features are brilliant and tapes can't compare. There's easy recording, I put a CD in, press record, walk away and in and in a few minutes I come back to find a minidisc recorded complete with track marks. If you havn't already got one then I would rush to the shops now. You may want a stereo system with an MD Player incorporated, but if you already have a perfectly good system then get a portable model- they're really are tiny! Depending on how much money you are willing to spend then you can get some amazing players. If you are deciding between a MD Player and an MP3 Player then choose minidisc. Using any minidisc player you can record MP3 files onto a md straight from your computer. The tape is gone, minidisc is here, thank God for that!

                  Advantages

                  Disadvantages

Death to the cassette. Quite frankly, tapes are rubbish in every way and anyone who still buys them really ought to get into the new millennium and wake up to the new technology now that it is reasonably priced. I've had MD for nearly 3 years now and yes, it WAS expensive when I first bought into it but I can safely say, without hesitation, that it's THE best piece of technology I have ever bought.I now own five MD machines including a car system (which I would not be without) and they are all Sony except for a small micro system which is a very impressive Aiwa. I still rate Sony as the tops in this and as they invented the thing in the first place, this is no surprise. I have never experienced any form of skipping or errant behaviour from an MD. The same cannot be said of CDs. MDs ought to be more popular than they currently are because they offer so much more than CDR. I think people are scared to take to the new technology for fear of obsolescence. I very much doubt this now as Sony has tried very hard to push the MD system and Sony Music have made an impressive effort to provide a plentiful supply of pre-recorded software. Sadly, not all the record companies have jumped on to the bandwagon yet (stand up Universal Records) but full marks to EMI, Virgin and Warners for embracing this most worthwhile technology. MD is here to stay. The cassette isn't.

                  Advantages

                  Disadvantages

Another brilliant product from our friends in Japan...I have not bought myself another CD since having purchased this little machine! It has proved to be most useful, especially if you are an active person...no skipping like those portable players and the size is ideal. It has been amazing to be able to rollerblade without a single skip and it has done wonders while riding a motorcycle on back roads. Technically, the recording power of the minidisc is amazing and crystal clear (comes with an optical fibre for direct recording from CDs). The ear phones are great and the remote control on them is amazing! But, beware of trying to use the cumbersome buttons to write the names of the songs or discs...you'll probably end up not saving them anyway! There are some problems however, one is the invention of the MP3 player which will erradicate most forms of music as we know it (apart from vinyl)! The other is that you can not use the power source and charge the battery. Whilst on the subject of the NiCad battery... its life is not the longest and the extra battery pack makes the minidisc heavier and bulkier! I guess you can't have it all, but this is a great buy and you will have hours of entertainment.
