Advantages: Cheap
Disadvantages: Faulty, Unrepairable, No Customer Support
I have the bitter experience of suffering at the hands of Toshiba whom I previously regarded as a purveyor of quality electrical goods? I purchased a 28 inch pro-logic widescreen TV from Comet three years ago at a cost of £600 or thereabouts. I was very pleased with the set as it had a host of features for the money that the rest just didn't have. Comet offered me their insurance for £270??? I declined. After 2 years the set started shutting down without warning, and as the months went by the screen started turning all white space to pink. Now that the set is 3 years old it shuts down after 5 minutes of use and is, to all intents and purposes, a pile of useless junk. I had an engineer round to look at it and as soon as he saw the set he advised me that the tube had gone, and that these cost more than the set was worth. He also told me that it was a known fault that Toshiba were aware of as the first batch of sets had been fitted with faulty tubes. I have since discovered that Toshiba would have provided a tube warranty for £39 (rather cheaper than Comet's £270)!!! I have written numerous emails to Comet and Toshiba regarding the set, and have even asked them for a list of authorised dealers in Bristol, but nothing. I have been back to Comet, but they do not want to know. So there we have it, Mr Consumer loses out yet again. Comet and Toshiba have my money, and I have absolutely nothing of any use. Thanks a bundle!!

- 30/12/02 Sorry you've had such a negative experience with this product. I'm very glad I didn't opt for a Toshiba now!
You could have provided a bit more info on the set itself before it went wrong to get a VU rating, but what you have said is useful.
I hope you have better luck with the next set ;) |

- 29/12/02 Manufacturer insurance is always worth exploring and comparing with that offered by the supplier. |

- 29/12/02 Legally, the set should be fit for purpose. While I would expect a typical TV set to last at least 5 years, display models bought under "managers special" offers could well have been running for as long as 14 hours a day for several months so may not make it.
I suggest a letter to Comet asking for a contribution towards a new set if you buy from Comet, as you feel that regardless of Warranty, the set should be capable of surviving longer than it has. While not being threatening, tell them you will consider a claim in the small claims court if they are not willing to compromise.
I would expect around 20% off a replacement as a result. This still keeps you as a customer, preserves some of their profitability and at the same time takes in to account that your telly would have gone kaput at some point in the future anyway so you would have had to replace it sooner or later (wear and tear!).
Alternat ively, how about a free warranty with the replacement?
Thi s route is cheaper to them than defending themselves in the small claims court, and should be more profitable to you than paying out legal costs that will be the same as any gain you could expect if a court rules in your favour, which ther is no guarantee of them doing.
If you make no progress, make all future purchases from John Lewis who automatically include extended warrnanty and price match deals anyway!
Good luck.
