I have wanted a set of two way radios for ages. It would have come in handy when I used to be a surveyor and had to set out roads.
I left the job but I still had the urge to own a pair. I finally bullied my younger brother and sister to get me some for christmas. I was sooo happy. I opened the packet and tried to use them straight away. They worked! I noticed on the battery cover that the plastic hinge was held in by a metal rod which on one of the hand sets was very loose and the hinge kept on falling out. I was thinking of taking it back but I really wanted to play on them so I continued to get a pair of tweezers and feed the metal rod through the hinge and fasten it to the two holes.
Using the radio I decided to test the range. I tolde my sister to stop playing with her christmas present and get involved in my very important experiment. She reluctantly agreed . I gave her one reciever and walked out the door with mine. I got into the car and kept on repeating "can you hear me" over and over again. I heard her from the car which was good then I continued to drive in the car. Radio in one hand steering wheel in the other. I was an under cover cop for a while. I got down to the first junction of my road which is about 100m away. This was fine. It was about 400 m away I could no longer hear her and got a seris of beeps. I was quite dissappointed by this but the spec did say 2mile terrain dependant. So I accepted that it couldn't really replace a mobile phone but it was still handy.
After the first month. I had lost the hinge for the radio and I am still able to use it but the battery cover will keep on falling off. Doh!!
Radios in general are good for anyone who spends a lot of time in group activites out doors in organising events. I also found that it could be useful when travvelling in a convoy of cars.
The next Time I will use it will be at a wedding. I will be the usher and I will make use of the VOC voice
activated switch.( I know that doesn't match the abbreviation but I cant remamber what it stands for)and I will attach it to a micro phone and pretend to be a body guard.
However unlike most of you out there this is only useful if you have at least one friend to use it with.
