I always wanted a DVD player, but the price was a little too high. When the January sales came and I saw this little number advertised on TV by a major electrical retailer for only £99. Which was an incredible price at the time so I rushed down to my local store to buy one. Lucky me I managed to get one.

Being an unheard of brand and being sold so cheap I wasn’t expecting too much, just as long as it worked I would be happy. However, this unit has turned out to be a little cracker.

The Oritron is about the size of a modern video recorder, but a little lower in height. Finished in silver it has a power button, the usual play, forward and reverse controls along with eject, menu and active navigation buttons on the front facia. The back panel has a scart socket, phono out sockets for Dolby 5.1 channel surround sound, stereo out, video out and a phono socket for coaxial digital out. No optical out though.
The display panel below the DVD tray only has a power on light, so don’t expect flashing graphics or numbers or the like.

Sound quality is excellent and it supports Dolby 5.1 digital surround sound and also DTS ( Digital Theatre School ) surround sound. Dolby is most common on DVD’s though.

Picture quality is as good as any I’ve seen on DVD players, I certainly am more than pleased with it. The picture is clear, colours are bright and there is no trace of artefacts during play.

The remote control is slim, well laid out and gives full control over the unit’s functions and features.

The On-Screen display gives all the information needed for use, and all the information normally found on the front of the unit in the fluorescent display, which is missing on this unit.

Now to the features, forward and reverse search with 4 speeds and slow motion with 4 speeds. Picture z
oom in and out from 0.5x to 2x, multi-angle picture view when supported on the disc, language selection, sound selection, Multi Disc Resume, Picture Aspect, Pan and Scan, subtitles, parental control over the disc’s that can be played and parental control over the controls as well. Some of these features need to be supported on the DVD disc.

On the whole I have found this to be an excellent budget DVD player, lacking only in the fluorescent display on the front and an optical out on the back. But as all the display info can be called onscreen, there’s not much lost in that. It is now selling for £149, a bit more than I paid, but still good value for money.

Summary:
